Conjunctions: 并 & 以及

Use 并 and 以及 to link words, phrases, and actions in formal Chinese

PatternA + 并 + B (actions) / A、B + 以及 + C (items)并 connects two verb phrases to show parallel or sequential actions, often in formal contexts. 以及 connects the last item in a list, functioning like "as well as" or "and" in formal enumeration.

他们同意并支持我们的建议。

Tāmen tóngyì bìng zhīchí wǒmen de jiànyì.

They agreed with and supported our proposal.

Use eight clause-level connectors to build complex, well-structured Chinese sentences

Pattern分句A + 连接词 + 分句BThese connectors link clauses or sentences to express addition (此外), contrast (而, 而是), reasoning (既然, 可见), emphasis (甚至), hypothesis (假如), and summary (总之). Each occupies a specific logical position in the sentence.

我们要认真听讲,此外还要积极完成作业。

Wǒmen yào rènzhēn tīngjiǎng, cǐwài hái yào jījí wánchéng zuòyè.

Tā liǎ hǎoxiàng cónglái méi jiàn guò shìde.

Pattern大 + A + 大 + BThis four-character pattern pairs two related single-character verbs or adjectives (A and B) with 大 to create a vivid expression suggesting something done boldly, excessively, or on a large scale.

你这大吃大喝的毛病对身体不好,一定要改改。

Nǐ zhè dà chī dà hē de máobìng duì shēntǐ bù hǎo, yídìng yào gǎigǎi.

Your habit of eating and drinking extravagantly is bad for your health — you really must change it.

她心情不好,为一点儿小事就大吵大闹。

Tā xīnqíng bù hǎo, wèi yìdiǎnr xiǎoshì jiù dà chǎo dà nào.

She was in a bad mood and made a huge fuss over a small matter.

Zhè shì biérén de dōngxi, wǒmen yì zhēn yì xiàn dōu bù néng ná.

These are other people's things — we cannot take even a needle or thread.

他一五一十地把情况汇报给了老师。

Tā yì wǔ yì shí de bǎ qíngkuàng huìbào gěi le lǎoshī.

He reported the situation to the teacher in full detail.

做事要一心一意,不能三心二意。

Zuòshì yào yì xīn yí yì, bù néng sān xīn èr yì.

You should do things wholeheartedly, not half-heartedly.

Pattern看来 + sentence (conclusion/inference)看来 is placed at the beginning of a sentence or clause to introduce a conclusion drawn from observation or evidence. It means "it seems that," "apparently," or "it looks like."

看来他是个好人。

Kànlái tā shì ge hǎo rén.

It seems he is a good person.

看来明天不会再下雨了。

Kànlái míngtiān bú huì zài xiàyǔ le.

It looks like it will not rain again tomorrow.

看来这次考试他能通过。

Kànlái zhè cì kǎoshì tā néng tōngguò.

It seems he can pass this exam.

Fixed Phrase: 来得及 / 来不及 (have time / not have time)

来得及/来不及 · láidejí / láibùjí

Use 来得及 and 来不及 to express whether there is enough time to do something

Pattern来得及 / 来不及 + verb phrase来得及 means "there is still time to" or "can make it in time." 来不及 means "there is not enough time" or "cannot make it." They can be used alone or followed by a verb phrase.

你别着急,时间来得及。

Nǐ bié zhāojí, shíjiān láidejí.

Don't worry, there is enough time.

现在刚六点半,你马上去还来得及。

Xiànzài gāng liù diǎn bàn, nǐ mǎshàng qù hái láidejí.

It is only six thirty — if you go right now, you can still make it.

来不及了,我们快走吧。

Láibùjí le, wǒmen kuài zǒu ba.

There is no time — let us go quickly.

Fixed Phrase: 说不定 (maybe / perhaps — uncertain)

说不定 · shuōbudìng

Use 说不定 to express uncertainty and speculation in a natural, conversational way

Pattern说不定 + sentence (speculation)说不定 is placed before a clause to express that something is uncertain and unpredictable. It means "maybe," "perhaps," or "you never know." It conveys a stronger sense of unpredictability than 可能.

下雨了,说不定他今天不来了。

Xiàyǔ le, shuōbudìng tā jīntiān bù lái le.

It is raining — maybe he will not come today.

这件事说不定就是他干的。

Zhè jiàn shì shuōbudìng jiù shì tā gàn de.

This matter — who knows, maybe he is the one who did it.

今年能不能去中国现在还说不定。

Jīnnián néng bu néng qù Zhōngguó xiànzài hái shuōbudìng.

Whether I can go to China this year is still uncertain.

Use 一般来说 to make generalizations and state what is typically true

Pattern一般来说,+ general statement一般来说 is placed at the beginning of a sentence, followed by a comma, to introduce a generalization. It means "generally speaking" or "in general."

一般来说,选手参加了比赛是不能退出的。

Yìbān lái shuō, xuǎnshǒu cānjiā le bǐsài shì bù néng tuìchū de.

Generally speaking, once a contestant enters a competition, they cannot withdraw.

一般来说,这么重要的场合他是不会迟到的。

Yìbān lái shuō, zhème zhòngyào de chǎnghé tā shì bú huì chídào de.

Generally speaking, he would not be late for such an important occasion.

一般来说,跟青年人相比,老年人的经验更丰富。

Yìbān lái shuō, gēn qīngnián rén xiāngbǐ, lǎonián rén de jīngyàn gèng fēngfù.

Use the pattern 一+MW+比+一+MW to express progressive increase or improvement

Pattern一 + measure word + 比 + 一 + measure word + adjective/verbThis pattern expresses that each successive item in a series surpasses the previous one. The same measure word is repeated on both sides of 比 to create a sense of progressive increase.

这些球鞋一双比一双好看。

Zhèxiē qiúxié yì shuāng bǐ yì shuāng hǎokàn.

These sneakers — each pair looks better than the last.

他的演出一次比一次精彩。

Tā de yǎnchū yí cì bǐ yí cì jīngcǎi.

His performances are more spectacular each time.

天气一天比一天暖和。

Tiānqì yì tiān bǐ yì tiān nuǎnhuo.
