Fixed Pattern: (自)……以来 (since / ever since)

(自)……以来 · (zì)... yǐlái

Use (自)……以来 to express "since" a point in time, describing what has happened from then until now

Pattern(自) + time point/event + 以来,+ sentence以来 follows a time point or event to mean "since." The optional 自 before the time point makes it more formal. The pattern introduces a time frame from a past point up to the present.

自去年以来,我一直生活在北京。

Zì qùnián yǐlái, wǒ yìzhí shēnghuó zài Běijīng.

Since last year, I have been living in Beijing.

上大学以来,他一直坚持学习中文。

Shàng dàxué yǐlái, tā yìzhí jiānchí xuéxí Zhōngwén.

Since starting college, he has been studying Chinese consistently.

自有了孩子以来,她每天都很忙。

Zì yǒu le háizi yǐlái, tā měitiān dōu hěn máng.

Ever since having a child, she has been busy every day.

Composed of: 由……组成

由……组成 · yóu … zǔchéng

Describe what something is made up of or composed of using the 由…组成 pattern

Pattern主语 + (是) + 由 + 组成部分 + 组成 + (的)Place 由 before the components and 组成 after them. The subject is the whole entity and the part after 由 lists its constituent elements. The optional 是…的 frame adds emphasis.

我们班由两位老师和二十位学生组成。

Wǒmen bān yóu liǎng wèi lǎoshī hé èrshí wèi xuéshēng zǔchéng.

Our class is composed of two teachers and twenty students.

这篇文章由三个部分组成。

Zhè piān wénzhāng yóu sān gè bùfen zǔchéng.

This article is made up of three parts.

这张试卷是由十道选择题和一道写作题组成的。

Zhè zhāng shìjuàn shì yóu shí dào xuǎnzétí hé yì dào xiězuòtí zǔchéng de.

This exam paper is composed of ten multiple-choice questions and one writing question.

Regarding / In the Aspect of: 在……方面

在……方面 · zài … fāngmiàn

Specify a domain or aspect when making statements using the 在…方面 pattern

Pattern在 + 某方面 + ,+ 主语 + 谓语Place 在…方面 at the beginning of the sentence (or before the predicate) to specify the domain you are talking about. 方面 means "aspect / area / field."

在这方面,我没有什么经验。

Zài zhè fāngmiàn, wǒ méiyǒu shénme jīngyàn.

In this regard, I do not have much experience.

在历史方面,他知道得很多。

Zài lìshǐ fāngmiàn, tā zhīdào de hěn duō.

When it comes to history, he knows a lot.

在修理电脑方面,她是个专家。

Zài xiūlǐ diànnǎo fāngmiàn, tā shì gè zhuānjiā.

In terms of computer repair, she is an expert.

Abstract Location: 在……上/下/中

在……上/下/中 · zài … shàng / xià / zhōng

Use 在…上, 在…下, and 在…中 to express abstract or figurative location such as "regarding," "under the influence of," and "in the process of"

Pattern在 + 名词/名词短语 + 上/下/中Place 在 before a noun or noun phrase, then add 上 (on / regarding), 下 (under / with the help of), or 中 (in / during / amid). These are abstract, not physical locations.

在这件事情上,最好多听父母的意见。

Zài zhè jiàn shìqing shàng, zuìhǎo duō tīng fùmǔ de yìjiàn.

Regarding this matter, you should listen more to your parents' opinions.

在他的影响下,我喜欢上了中文。

Zài tā de yǐngxiǎng xià, wǒ xǐhuan shàng le Zhōngwén.

Under his influence, I came to love Chinese.

在这篇课文中,我们一共学了二三十个生词。

Zài zhè piān kèwén zhōng, wǒmen yígòng xué le èrsānshí gè shēngcí.

In this text, we learned a total of twenty to thirty new words.

Subject-Predicate Phrase as Subject

主谓短语作主语 · zhǔwèi duǎnyǔ zuò zhǔyǔ

Use a complete subject-predicate phrase as the subject of a larger sentence

Pattern[主语 + 谓语] + 谓语/形容词/是……的A mini sentence (subject + predicate) functions as the subject of a larger sentence. The main predicate then comments on this entire clause.

他不去也可以。

Tā bù qù yě kěyǐ.

Him not going is also fine.

身体健康很重要。

Shēntǐ jiànkāng hěn zhòngyào.

Being physically healthy is very important.

我参加中文水平考试是为了获得奖学金去中国留学。

Wǒ cānjiā Zhōngwén shuǐpíng kǎoshì shì wèile huòdé jiǎngxuéjīn qù Zhōngguó liúxué.

My taking the Chinese proficiency exam is in order to get a scholarship to study abroad in China.
