Patient as Subject (Notional Passive)

受事主语 · shòushì zhǔyǔ

Place the object (patient) in subject position to emphasize what happened to it, without using 被

Pattern受事(宾语) + 主语(施事) + 动词 + 补语/了Move the object (the thing being acted upon) to the front of the sentence as the topic/subject. The doer (agent) may appear after the object or be omitted entirely.

饭都吃光了。

Fàn dōu chī guāng le.

The food has all been eaten up.

作业我做完了。

Zuòyè wǒ zuò wán le.

The homework — I have finished it.

这本书我已经看过三遍了。

Zhè běn shū wǒ yǐjīng kàn guò sān biàn le.

This book — I have already read it three times.

Multiple Attributives (Stacked Modifiers)

多项定语 · duōxiàng dìngyǔ

Stack multiple modifiers before a noun in the correct order following Chinese attributive sequencing rules

Pattern领属 + 指示/数量 + 形容词/描写性 + 名词中心语When multiple modifiers (attributives) describe one noun, they follow a specific order: possessive/belonging first, then demonstrative/quantity, then descriptive adjectives, then the head noun. Use 的 between longer modifiers and the noun.

我有一条漂亮的红围巾。

Wǒ yǒu yì tiáo piàoliang de hóng wéijīn.

I have a beautiful red scarf.

我那两件白色长衬衫放在哪里了?

Wǒ nà liǎng jiàn báisè cháng chènshān fàng zài nǎlǐ le?

Where did I put those two white long shirts of mine?

那位戴着眼镜的白头发高个子老人就是我们的校长。

Nà wèi dàizhe yǎnjìng de bái tóufa gāo gèzi lǎorén jiù shì wǒmen de xiàozhǎng.

Use directional complements (上, 出, 起, 下) in their figurative and extended meanings beyond physical direction

Pattern动词 + 上/出/起/下 (figurative meaning)Directional complements 上, 出, 起, and 下 extend beyond physical movement to express abstract results: 上 (achievement/attachment), 出 (emergence/expression), 起 (recall/initiation), 下 (retention/recording).

Qǐng tóngxuémen líkāi jiàoshì shí guānshàng chuānghu.

Please close the windows when you leave the classroom.

他向父母说出了自己的愿望。

Tā xiàng fùmǔ shuōchū le zìjǐ de yuànwàng.

He expressed his wish to his parents.

他终于想起了当时的情况。

Advanced 把-Sentences: Disposal

"把"字句2:表处置 · "bǎ" zì jù 2: biǎo chǔzhì

Use advanced 把-sentence patterns including reduplicated verbs, resultative complements with 了/着, and measure complements

Pattern(1) S + 把 + O + V(+一/了)+V (2) S + 把 + O (+给) + V + 了/着 (3) S + 把 + O + V + 动量/时量补语Three advanced 把-sentence patterns: (1) with reduplicated verbs for a casual/brief action, (2) with 了 (completed) or 着 (sustained state), optionally using 给, and (3) with measure complements indicating frequency or duration.

同学们再把试卷检查检查。

Tóngxuémen zài bǎ shìjuàn jiǎnchá jiǎnchá.

Students, please check the exam paper once more.

我把桌子擦一擦。

Wǒ bǎ zhuōzi cā yī cā.

Let me give the table a wipe.

Short Passive: 被 Without Agent

被动句2:主语+被+动词+其他成分 · bèidòng jù 2: zhǔyǔ + bèi + dòngcí + qítā chéngfèn

Form passive sentences using 被 without stating the agent (doer), focusing on what happened to the subject

Pattern主语(受事) + 被 + 动词 + 其他成分(补语/了)Place 被 directly before the verb without naming the agent. The subject is the patient (the thing acted upon). The verb must have additional elements after it — a complement, 了, or other result markers.

王老师被请去开会了。

Wáng lǎoshī bèi qǐng qù kāihuì le.

Teacher Wang was invited to attend a meeting.

教室的灯早就被关上了。

Jiàoshì de dēng zǎo jiù bèi guānshàng le.

The classroom lights were turned off long ago.

那张画儿被买走了。

Nà zhāng huàr bèi mǎi zǒu le.

That painting was bought and taken away.

Existential Sentences 2: Appearance & Disappearance

存现句2 · cúnxiàn jù 2

Describe the appearance or disappearance of people and things at a location using existential sentence patterns

Pattern处所词 + 动词 + 趋向/结果补语 + (了) + 数量短语 + 人/物The location comes first, followed by a verb with a directional or resultative complement. For appearance, the complement shows arrival (来, 出来). For disappearance, it shows departure (走, 跑). The person or thing appears at the end with a quantity phrase.

前边开来一辆车。

Qiánbian kāi lái yí liàng chē.

A car drove over from ahead.

我家昨天来了几位客人。

Wǒ jiā zuótiān lái le jǐ wèi kèrén.

A few guests came to my home yesterday.

教室里走出来一位老师。

Jiàoshì lǐ zǒu chūlái yí wèi lǎoshī.

A teacher walked out of the classroom.

Pivotal Sentences 2

兼语句2 · jiānyǔjù 2

Use pivotal sentences to express praise/criticism and to assign titles or roles

Pattern主语 + 表扬/批评 + 宾语1 + 动词 + 宾语2 | 主语 + 叫/称/选 + 宾语1 + 做/为/当/是 + 宾语2In a pivotal sentence (兼语句), the object of the first verb simultaneously serves as the subject of the second verb. This lesson covers two new subtypes: (1) verbs expressing praise or criticism, and (2) verbs assigning titles, definitions, or roles.

老师表扬他帮助同学。

Lǎoshī biǎoyáng tā bāngzhù tóngxué.

The teacher praised him for helping classmates.

妈妈总是批评我不整理房间。

Māma zǒngshì pīpíng wǒ bù zhěnglǐ fángjiān.

Mom always criticizes me for not tidying my room.

大家都称他为先生。

Dàjiā dōu chēng tā wéi xiānshēng.

Everyone calls him "sir."
