Subject-Predicate Phrase as Subject
主谓短语作主语
Use a complete subject-predicate phrase as the subject of a larger sentence
A mini sentence (subject + predicate) functions as the subject of a larger sentence. The main predicate then comments on this entire clause.
In English, we often use "that" clauses or gerunds: "That he didn't go is fine" or "His leaving early surprised everyone." Chinese does this more directly by placing the whole clause in subject position without any marker.

Understanding 主谓短语作主语
One of the things that makes Chinese grammar flexible and fascinating is that an entire subject-predicate phrase can serve as the subject of a larger sentence. There is no "that" or "it" needed — you simply state the mini-sentence and then comment on it. For example, 他不去也可以 means "Him not going is also fine" — the phrase 他不去 (he does not go) is the subject, and 也可以 (is also fine) is the comment. Similarly, 身体健康很重要 means "Being physically healthy is very important" — 身体健康 (body is healthy) is the subject phrase. This pattern sounds natural once you get used to it, and it allows you to express complex ideas efficiently. You will see it constantly in both spoken and written Chinese.
Key Points
- The subject can be a full clause: [subject + verb/adjective] acting as the main subject.
- No connecting word like "that" is needed — Chinese places the clause directly.
- The main predicate comments on the entire subject-predicate phrase.
- Common comment predicates include: 很重要, 很好, 可以, 是为了…, 不行, 没关系.
- This pattern is used in both casual speech (他不去没关系) and formal writing.
- The subject phrase can be quite long: 我参加中文水平考试 + 是为了获得奖学金.
This grammatical flexibility reflects a broader characteristic of Chinese: topic-comment structure. Chinese sentences often put the "what we are talking about" first and then add a comment. This is a key difference from English and explains many word-order patterns you will encounter.

Do not add 的 between the subject phrase and the comment. The subject-predicate phrase directly precedes the main predicate.
