+ sentence (speculation)

说不定 is placed before a clause to express that something is uncertain and unpredictable. It means "maybe," "perhaps," or "you never know." It conveys a stronger sense of unpredictability than 可能.

说不定 literally means "cannot say for certain." It often implies that the outcome is hard to predict or could go either way. It is more colloquial and conversational than 可能, and carries a sense of "who knows — it might just happen."

Understanding 说不定

The phrase 说不定 (shuōbudìng) is a wonderfully expressive way to say "maybe" or "who knows" in Chinese. While 可能 is a neutral, factual "possibly," 说不定 adds a layer of unpredictability and surprise — it suggests that the outcome is genuinely uncertain and could go in an unexpected direction. Literally, 说不定 means "cannot say for sure," which perfectly captures its meaning. You use it when you want to speculate about something where the result is genuinely up in the air. For example, 说不定他今天不来了 does not just mean "maybe he won't come" — it implies "who knows, he might not show up." It is particularly common in casual conversation when discussing weather, other people's plans, or unpredictable situations. 说不定 can also be placed at the end of a sentence for emphasis: 今年能不能去中国还说不定 (Whether I can go to China this year is still uncertain).

Key Points

  • 说不定 = "maybe / perhaps / who knows" — stronger unpredictability than 可能.
  • Literally means "cannot say for certain."
  • Usually placed before the clause: 说不定 + speculation.
  • Can also appear at the end: …还说不定 (is still uncertain).
  • More colloquial and conversational than 可能 or 也许.
  • Often implies the speaker finds the situation genuinely hard to predict.

Chinese speakers often use 说不定 to soften predictions and avoid seeming overly confident about uncertain outcomes. This reflects a cultural preference for modesty in claims — you acknowledge that you do not have all the information and the world is unpredictable.
