Colloquial: X是X (Conceding a Point)

X是X · X shì X

Use X是X to concede a point while introducing a contrast — "X is indeed X, but..."

PatternAdjective/Verb + 是 + Adjective/Verb,(就是/但/不过) + contrasting pointThe same word is placed on both sides of 是: "good is good (好是好)," "went is went (去是去了)." This concedes the truth of the first statement, then a contrast follows. It means "I admit X, but..."

去是去了,就是不知道结果怎么样。

Qù shì qù le, jiùshì bù zhīdào jiéguǒ zěnmeyàng.

I did go, but I do not know how it turned out.

好是好,但不知道老师会不会同意。

Hǎo shì hǎo, dàn bù zhīdào lǎoshī huì bù huì tóngyì.

It is good, but I am not sure if the teacher will agree.

贵是贵,不过质量确实不错。

Guì shì guì, bùguò zhìliàng quèshí búcuò.

It is expensive, I admit, but the quality is really good.

Colloquial: 不X不X,一X……

不X不X……,一X…… · bù X bù X……, yī X……

Use 不X不X,一X... to express that not doing something left you unaware, but once you did it, you were shocked by the result

Pattern不 + Verb + 不 + Result,一 + Verb + Surprising outcomeThe first half (不X不X) means "if you don't X, you won't realize something." The second half (一X) means "once you X, you are surprised/shocked." Together they create a dramatic before-and-after: blissful ignorance vs. shocking discovery.

不看不知道,一看吓一跳,这里变化太大了!

Bù kàn bù zhīdào, yī kàn xià yī tiào, zhèlǐ biànhuà tài dà le!

I had no idea until I looked — and when I looked, I was shocked! The changes here are enormous!

这题目看起来很简单,不做不知道,一做真不会!

Zhè tímù kàn qǐlái hěn jiǎndān, bù zuò bù zhīdào, yī zuò zhēn bù huì!

This problem looks simple, but you do not realize until you try — once you start, you really cannot do it!

不问不知道,一问吓一跳,原来这件衣服要三千块!

Bù wèn bù zhīdào, yī wèn xià yī tiào, yuánlái zhè jiàn yīfu yào sānqiān kuài!

I had no idea until I asked — and when I asked, I got a shock: this piece of clothing costs 3000 yuan!

Colloquial: 好你个X

好你个X · hǎo nǐ gè X

Use 好你个X to exclaim surprise, anger, or playful accusation directed at someone — "You X, you!"

Pattern好你个 + Noun/Name/Label + ,(accusation or exclamation)好 here is not "good" — it is an exclamatory intensifier expressing strong emotion. 你个 means "you (a certain)." The X is a label for the person: their name, a description (小偷, 骗子), or a nickname. The whole phrase is an emotionally charged exclamation directed at someone.

好你个小偷儿,敢偷我的东西,我送你去警察局!

Hǎo nǐ gè xiǎotōur, gǎn tōu wǒ de dōngxi, wǒ sòng nǐ qù jǐngchájú!

You thief! How dare you steal my things — I will take you to the police station!

好你个大骗子,还好我聪明,没上你的当!

Hǎo nǐ gè dà piànzi, hái hǎo wǒ cōngmíng, méi shàng nǐ de dàng!

You big liar! Luckily I was smart enough not to fall for your trick!

好你个老王,一点儿忙都不帮我!

Hǎo nǐ gè Lǎo Wáng, yīdiǎnr máng dōu bù bāng wǒ!

You, Old Wang! You would not help me at all!

Whatever You Say Goes: V+什么(就)是什么

动词+什么(就)是什么 · dòngcí + shénme (jiù) shì shénme

Express unconditional acceptance or challenge the idea that someone can have whatever they want

PatternSubject + V + 什么 + (就) + 是什么The verb is repeated with 什么 to express "whatever someone says/does, that is what it is." It conveys total submission or acceptance when used sincerely, or sarcasm and challenge when used rhetorically.

行啊!你说什么是什么,都听你的。

Xíng a! Nǐ shuō shénme shì shénme, dōu tīng nǐ de.

Fine! Whatever you say goes — I will listen to you.

哪有这么容易的,你想什么就是什么?

Nǎ yǒu zhème róngyì de, nǐ xiǎng shénme jiù shì shénme?

Since when is it that easy — you think you can have whatever you want?

别以为你要什么就是什么,世界不是围着你转的。

Bié yǐwéi nǐ yào shénme jiù shì shénme, shìjiè bú shì wéizhe nǐ zhuàn de.

Don't think you can just demand whatever you want — the world doesn't revolve around you.

Bad Timing: 早(也)不X,晚(也)不X

早(也)不X,晚(也)不X · zǎo (yě) bù X, wǎn (yě) bù X

Express frustration about something happening at the worst possible moment

Pattern早(也)不X,晚(也)不X,偏偏/恰好/正好 + [bad timing event]This pattern uses parallel structure to emphasize that something did not happen earlier and did not happen later — it happened at exactly the wrong time. The speaker is complaining about terrible timing.

早不来,晚不来,恰好要出门的时候他来了。

Zǎo bù lái, wǎn bù lái, qiàhǎo yào chūmén de shíhou tā lái le.

He didn't come early, didn't come late — he showed up right when I was about to leave.

早也不走,晚也不走,需要他的时候他却走了。

Zǎo yě bù zǒu, wǎn yě bù zǒu, xūyào tā de shíhou tā què zǒu le.

He didn't leave early, didn't leave late — he left right when we needed him.

早不下雨,晚不下雨,偏偏出门的时候下起雨来了。

Zǎo bù xiàyǔ, wǎn bù xiàyǔ, piānpiān chūmén de shíhou xià qǐ yǔ lái le.

It didn't rain earlier, didn't rain later — of course it started raining right when I went out.

Look How X You Are: 看/瞧把+Object+X得

看/瞧把+宾语(施事)+X得 · kàn / qiáo bǎ + bīnyǔ (shīshì) + X de

Comment on the extreme state someone has reached, often with teasing or mild reproach

Pattern看/瞧 + 把 + Object + V/Adj + 得 + (complement)This exclamatory structure draws attention to someone's current state. 看 or 瞧 (both mean "look") + 把 introduces the person, followed by a verb or adjective with 得 showing the resulting degree. The complement after 得 is often omitted when the state is obvious.

真是小孩子呀,看把他乐得。

Zhēn shì xiǎo háizi ya, kàn bǎ tā lè de.

What a kid — look how happy he is.

瞧把他得意得,都不知道自己是谁了。

Qiáo bǎ tā déyì de, dōu bù zhīdào zìjǐ shì shéi le.

Look how smug he is — he doesn't even know who he is anymore.

瞧把他吓得,都不知道说什么了。

Qiáo bǎ tā xià de, dōu bù zhīdào shuō shénme le.

Look how scared he is — he doesn't even know what to say.

Wasting a Good Thing: 放着X不Y

放着X不Y · fàngzhe X bù Y

Express frustration that someone ignores an available good option in favor of something worse

Pattern放着 + [good option] + 不 + [expected action],偏要/非要 + [worse choice]Literally "leaving X sitting there and not Y-ing it." The speaker is bewildered or annoyed that someone has a perfectly good option available but refuses to take advantage of it, choosing something inferior instead.

你可别放着好日子不过,在这儿找麻烦。

Nǐ kě bié fàngzhe hǎo rìzi bú guò, zài zhèr zhǎo máfan.

Don't throw away your good life by causing trouble here.

他放着好好的学不上,非要跑去外面打工。

Tā fàngzhe hǎohǎo de xué bú shàng, fēi yào pǎo qù wàimiàn dǎgōng.

He has perfectly good schooling available but insists on going out to work instead.

放着大路不走,偏要走小路,结果迷路了。

Fàngzhe dàlù bù zǒu, piān yào zǒu xiǎolù, jiéguǒ mílù le.

With a main road available, he insisted on taking the small path — and got lost.
