Preposition 由 — Introducing the Agent

介词:由² · jiècí: yóu

Use the preposition 由 to indicate who is responsible for or carries out an action

Pattern由 + agent + 来/去 + verb phrasePlace 由 before the person or group responsible for performing an action. The verb 来 or 去 often appears after the agent to soften the assignment or suggestion. 由 can also directly precede the verb without 来/去 in more formal contexts.

这道题由你来回答吧。

Zhè dào tí yóu nǐ lái huídá ba.

This question — you answer it.

这件事情由班长负责。

Zhè jiàn shìqing yóu bānzhǎng fùzé.

This matter is the class monitor's responsibility.

Preposition 凭 — By Means Of

介词:凭 · jiècí: píng

Use 凭 to express doing something based on a certain basis, credential, or ability

Pattern凭 + noun/ability + verb phrasePlace 凭 before the basis, credential, or quality that enables or justifies an action. The noun after 凭 can be a concrete item (a ticket, a certificate) or an abstract quality (experience, ability, effort).

凭他的水平,通过这次考试没有问题。

Píng tā de shuǐpíng, tōngguò zhè cì kǎoshì méiyǒu wèntí.

Given his level, passing this exam is no problem.

凭经验进行判断往往是不准确的。

Píng jīngyàn jìnxíng pànduàn wǎngwǎng shì bú zhǔnquè de.

Making judgments based on experience alone is often inaccurate.

Preposition 依据 — Based On (Formal)

Use 依据 to express formal reasoning based on facts, evidence, or regulations

Pattern依据 + noun (facts/rules/evidence) + verb phrasePlace 依据 before the factual basis, law, regulation, or evidence upon which an action or conclusion is grounded. 依据 is formal and typically used in written Chinese, news, legal contexts, and official speech.

要依据事实办事。

Yào yījù shìshí bànshì.

One must act based on facts.

警察依据线索抓住了坏人。

Jǐngchá yījù xiànsuǒ zhuāzhù le huàirén.

The police caught the criminal based on clues.

依据公司的规定,迟到要扣工资。

Preposition 依照 — In Accordance With

Use 依照 to express acting in accordance with rules, customs, or someone's wishes

Pattern依照 + noun (rules/customs/wishes) + verb phrasePlace 依照 before the standard, rule, custom, or wish that guides the action. 依照 emphasizes conformity and compliance — the action follows the stated standard closely.

他想依照自己喜欢的方式去生活。

Tā xiǎng yīzhào zìjǐ xǐhuān de fāngshì qù shēnghuó.

He wants to live according to his own preferred way.

依照学校的规定,学生要按时上课,不能迟到。

Yīzhào xuéxiào de guīdìng, xuéshēng yào ànshí shàngkè, bù néng chídào.

According to school rules, students must attend class on time and cannot be late.

我们应该依照合同办事。

Wǒmen yīnggāi yīzhào hétong bànshì.

Clause Connectors: 从而, 加上, 完了, 一旦

连接分句或句子:从而、加上、完了、一旦 · liánjiē fēnjù huò jùzi: cóng'ér, jiāshàng, wánle, yídàn

Use four advanced conjunctions to connect clauses expressing result, addition, sequence, and contingency

PatternClause A + 从而/加上/完了/一旦 + Clause B从而 links a cause to its result ("thereby"). 加上 adds a supplementary reason or factor ("plus / in addition"). 完了 marks the completion of one action before the next ("after finishing"). 一旦 introduces a hypothetical condition with significant consequences ("once / if ever").

他努力学习,从而实现了当翻译的理想。

Tā nǔlì xuéxí, cóng'ér shíxiàn le dāng fānyì de lǐxiǎng.

He studied hard, thereby achieving his dream of becoming a translator.

今天天气不太好,加上你还有很多作业,我们还是别去公园了吧。

Jīntiān tiānqì bú tài hǎo, jiāshàng nǐ hái yǒu hěn duō zuòyè, wǒmen háishi bié qù gōngyuán le ba.

The weather isn't great today, plus you still have a lot of homework — let's not go to the park.

你快点儿写作业,完了我们去公园玩儿。

Particle 也好 — "That Would Be Fine" / "Whether...Or..."

Use the particle 也好 to express acceptance, concession, or the "whether X or Y" pattern

Pattern1) Verb/Clause + 也好 | 2) A也好, B也好, (都)……In usage 1, 也好 appears at the end of a clause and means "that would be fine / it's not a bad idea." In usage 2, 也好 appears after two or more alternatives and means "whether A or B (it doesn't matter)" — the result applies regardless.

让他亲自在现场试一试也好。

Ràng tā qīnzì zài xiànchǎng shì yi shì yěhǎo.

It would be fine to let him try it on-site in person.

你来也好,不来也好,随便吧。

Nǐ lái yěhǎo, bù lái yěhǎo, suíbiàn ba.

Whether you come or not, it's up to you.

多学一门语言也好,将来可以凭此找份工作。

Duō xué yì mén yǔyán yěhǎo, jiānglái kěyǐ píng cǐ zhǎo fèn gōngzuò.

Learning an extra language would be good — you could find a job with it in the future.

Pattern A来A去 — Back and Forth

Use the A来A去 pattern to express repeated or prolonged action without resolution

PatternVerb + 来 + same Verb + 去Repeat the same verb with 来 and 去 to express doing something repeatedly, going back and forth, or being unable to reach a conclusion. The pattern conveys duration, repetition, or futility.

想来想去,还是小王最合适。

Xiǎng lái xiǎng qù, háishi Xiǎo Wáng zuì héshì.

After thinking it over and over, Xiao Wang is still the most suitable.

大家讨论来讨论去,最后还是没解决。

Dàjiā tǎolùn lái tǎolùn qù, zuìhòu háishi méi jiějué.

Everyone discussed it back and forth, but in the end it still wasn't resolved.

她是一名导游,经常在世界各地飞来飞去。

Tā shì yì míng dǎoyóu, jīngcháng zài shìjiè gèdì fēi lái fēi qù.

She is a tour guide, constantly flying back and forth around the world.

Pattern A着A着 — While Doing A...

Use the A着A着 pattern to describe an unexpected change or event that occurs during an ongoing action

PatternVerb + 着 + same Verb + 着 + (就) + unexpected resultRepeat a verb with the continuous marker 着 to express that while the action was ongoing, something unexpected happened. The second clause describes the surprise event or change.

她说着说着就哭起来了。

Tā shuōzhe shuōzhe jiù kū qǐlái le.

While she was talking, she suddenly started crying.

我躺在床上看电视,看着看着就睡着了。

Wǒ tǎng zài chuáng shàng kàn diànshì, kànzhe kànzhe jiù shuìzháo le.

I was lying in bed watching TV, and while watching, I fell asleep.

他们走着走着就迷路了。

Tāmen zǒuzhe zǒuzhe jiù mílù le.

They were walking along and then got lost.

Pattern 没A没B — Without A Without B

四字格式:没A没B · sì zì géshì: méi A méi B

Use the 没A没B pattern to express a lack of two related things, often with a critical or negative tone

Pattern没(有) + A + 没(有) + BUse 没 before two related nouns or verbs to describe a state of lacking both. A and B are typically contrasting or complementary pairs. The pattern often carries a critical, emphatic, or humorous tone.

一上午没吃没喝,我要饿死了。

Yì shàngwǔ méi chī méi hē, wǒ yào è sǐ le.

I haven't eaten or drunk anything all morning — I'm starving!

这孩子说话没大没小的,一点儿礼貌都没有。

Zhè háizi shuōhuà méi dà méi xiǎo de, yìdiǎnr lǐmào dōu méiyǒu.

This child speaks without any sense of propriety — completely impolite.

他没日没夜地工作,身体都累坏了。

Tā méi rì méi yè de gōngzuò, shēntǐ dōu lèi huài le.

He worked day and night without stopping and wore himself out.
