不X白不X · bù X bái bù X

Use the colloquial pattern 不X白不X to express "might as well do X since there's nothing to lose"

Pattern不 + verb + 白不 + verbRepeat the same verb in the frame 不V白不V. 白 means "for nothing / in vain." The whole phrase means "if you don't V, you're missing out for nothing" — so you might as well do it.

今天班长请客,咱们不吃白不吃。

Jīntiān bānzhǎng qǐngkè, zánmen bù chī bái bù chī.

The class monitor is treating us today — might as well eat!

这个电影是免费的,不看白不看。

Zhège diànyǐng shì miǎnfèi de, bú kàn bái bú kàn.

This movie is free — might as well watch it!

Colloquial: V + 一X是一X (Every X Counts)

动词+一X是一X · dòngcí + yī X shì yī X

Use the pattern V + 一X是一X to express "every bit counts" or "take it one X at a time"

Pattern动词 + 一 + X + 是 + 一 + XThe verb is followed by 一X是一X, where X is a measure word or noun. This means "every X counts" or "do what you can, one X at a time." It can express either a positive determination (every effort matters) or a negative resignation (just drifting along).

做一道题是一道题,你一定能做完。

Zuò yí dào tí shì yí dào tí, nǐ yídìng néng zuò wán.

Solve one problem at a time — each one counts. You can definitely finish!

虽然日子过得很困苦,但也不能过一天是一天。

Suīrán rìzi guò de hěn kùnkǔ, dàn yě bù néng guò yì tiān shì yì tiān.

Even though life is hard, you can't just drift along day by day.

Use the pattern (没)有什么(好)X的 to dismiss something as not worth worrying, fearing, or being excited about

Pattern没有什么 (好) + adjective/verb + 的Use 没有什么好X的 to dismiss an emotion or reaction as unnecessary. X is typically a psychological verb or adjective (紧张, 害怕, 担心, 难过). The pattern means "there is nothing to X about" — used to comfort, reassure, or downplay.

这才刚刚开始,没有什么好紧张的。

Zhè cái gānggāng kāishǐ, méiyǒu shénme hǎo jǐnzhāng de.

This has just begun — there's nothing to be nervous about.

你还是别担心了,有什么好害怕的。

Nǐ háishi bié dānxīn le, yǒu shénme hǎo hàipà de.

Stop worrying — what is there to be afraid of?

X是X,Y是Y · X shì X, Y shì Y

Use the pattern X是X,Y是Y to insist that two things should be kept separate and not confused

PatternX + 是 + X,Y + 是 + YRepeat each element with 是 to emphasize that X and Y are fundamentally different and should not be confused or mixed together. It draws a clear boundary between two things, people, or matters.

一是一,二是二,这要分清楚。

Yī shì yī, èr shì èr, zhè yào fēn qīngchǔ.

One is one and two is two — we need to be clear about this.

她是她,我是我,是完全不同的人。

Tā shì tā, wǒ shì wǒ, shì wánquán bùtóng de rén.

She is she and I am I — we are completely different people.

亲人是亲人,今天是今天,你得交作业。

Qīnrén shì qīnrén, jīntiān shì jīntiān, nǐ děi jiāo zuòyè.

Family is family, but today is today — you still have to turn in your homework.

Whether X or Not with 也罢

X也罢,不X也罢 · X yě bà, bù X yě bà

Use the pattern X也罢,不X也罢 to express that something will happen regardless of a condition

PatternX也罢,不X也罢,(主语 +) 都/也 + 结果Place a verb or adjective in both the affirmative and negative slots around 也罢 to convey "whether X or not X, the result is the same." The second clause typically contains 都 or 也 to emphasize the unchanging outcome.

这件事你同意也罢,不同意也罢,你都得参加。

Zhè jiàn shì nǐ tóngyì yě bà, bù tóngyì yě bà, nǐ dōu děi cānjiā.

Whether you agree or not, you have to participate in this.

你想去也罢,不想去也罢,你必须陪我。

Nǐ xiǎng qù yě bà, bù xiǎng qù yě bà, nǐ bìxū péi wǒ.

Whether you want to go or not, you must accompany me.

他喜欢也罢,不喜欢也罢,这个决定不会改变。

Tā xǐhuān yě bà, bù xǐhuān yě bà, zhège juédìng bù huì gǎibiàn.

Just Do X with 就是了

X就是了 · X jiùshì le

Use 就是了 to reassure someone or suggest that doing something is simple and sufficient

Pattern(主语 +) 动词/动词短语 + 就是了Attach 就是了 after a verb or verb phrase to express "just do X and that will be enough." It simplifies the situation and reassures the listener that no further worry or action is needed.

你别着急了,了解清楚就是了。

Nǐ bié zhāojí le, liǎojiě qīngchǔ jiùshì le.

Don't worry, just get a clear understanding and that's it.

他已经知道错了,原谅他就是了。

Tā yǐjīng zhīdào cuò le, yuánliàng tā jiùshì le.

He already knows he was wrong — just forgive him.

你不会做就问老师就是了。

Nǐ bù huì zuò jiù wèn lǎoshī jiùshì le.

If you can't do it, just ask the teacher, that's all.
