Rhetorical "这又X" — So What?

这又X · zhè yòu X

Use 这又X to rhetorically dismiss a concern or express "so what" / "what does it matter"

Pattern这又 + 怎么了 / 怎么样 / 有什么关系Use 这又 before a rhetorical question word or phrase to challenge or dismiss the relevance of a previous statement. The speaker implies "this doesn't matter" or "what's wrong with that?"

我都看不懂,这又怎么了?

Wǒ dōu kàn bù dǒng, zhè yòu zěnme le?

I can't understand any of it — so what?

这诗写得我都看不懂。——这又怎么了?诗本来就不好懂。

Zhè shī xiě de wǒ dōu kàn bù dǒng. —— Zhè yòu zěnme le? Shī běnlái jiù bù hǎo dǒng.

This poem is written so I can't understand it. — So what? Poetry is hard to understand by nature.

我没听说过这个牌子。——没听说过就没听说过呗,这又有什么关系?

Wǒ méi tīng shuō guò zhège páizi. —— Méi tīng shuō guò jiù méi tīng shuō guò bei, zhè yòu yǒu shénme guānxì?

I've never heard of this brand. — So you haven't, what does it matter?

Go Ahead and Do Your Thing with 你X你的吧

你X你的吧 · nǐ X nǐ de ba

Use the pattern 你X你的吧 to tell someone to go ahead and do what they are doing without worrying about the speaker

Pattern你 + 动词 + 你的 + 吧Insert a monosyllabic verb between 你 and 你的吧 to tell someone to continue doing their thing. The speaker is either being considerate (freeing the listener from obligation) or dismissive (signaling disengagement).

你忙你的吧,别管我做饭。

Nǐ máng nǐ de ba, bié guǎn wǒ zuòfàn.

Go ahead and stay busy, don't worry about me cooking.

没有什么事,你休息你的吧!

Méi yǒu shénme shì, nǐ xiūxi nǐ de ba!

There's nothing going on — go ahead and rest!

你忙你的吧,我跟孩子玩儿一会儿。

Nǐ máng nǐ de ba, wǒ gēn háizi wánr yíhuìr.

Keep doing your work — I'll play with the kids for a bit.

Just Do as You're Told with 让X就X

让/叫/给X你就X · ràng/jiào/gěi X nǐ jiù X

Use the pattern 让/叫/给X你就X to tell someone to simply comply without questioning

Pattern让/叫/给 + 你 + 动词 + 你就 + 动词 (+ 其他)The verb appears twice: first after the causative word (让/叫/给) and again after 就. The pattern means "if someone tells you to do X, then just do X." It expresses a command to comply without resistance or unnecessary questions.

让你做你就做,别多问了。

Ràng nǐ zuò nǐ jiù zuò, bié duō wèn le.

Just do what you're told — stop asking so many questions.

叫你吃你就吃,其他的你别管。

Jiào nǐ chī nǐ jiù chī, qítā de nǐ bié guǎn.

Eat when I tell you to eat — don't worry about the rest.

让你安静你就安静,别那么多话。

Ràng nǐ ānjìng nǐ jiù ānjìng, bié nàme duō huà.

When I tell you to be quiet, be quiet — stop talking so much.

No Matter What, Must X with 说什么也得

说什么/怎么(着)也得X · shuō shénme / zěnme (zhe) yě děi X

Use 说什么也得 and 怎么也得 to express strong determination that something must happen regardless of obstacles

Pattern(主语 +) 说什么也得 / 怎么(着)也得 + 动词短语Place 说什么也得 or 怎么(着)也得 before the action to emphasize that no matter what happens, the action must be carried out. 得 (děi) here means "must/have to."

他生病了,我说什么也得去看看他。

Tā shēngbìng le, wǒ shuō shénme yě děi qù kànkan tā.

He's sick — I absolutely must go see him no matter what.

这么重要的活动,你怎么也得来一下儿。

Zhème zhòngyào de huódòng, nǐ zěnme yě děi lái yíxiàr.

Such an important event — you really must come, no matter what.

没时间了,说什么也得走了。

Méi shíjiān le, shuō shénme yě děi zǒu le.

There's no time left — we must leave now no matter what.

Modal Verb: 得 (děi) — Must / Have to

能愿动词:得 · néngyuàn dòngcí: děi

Express necessity or obligation using 得 (děi) meaning "must" or "have to"

Pattern主语 + 得 (děi) + 动词 (+ 其他成分)Place 得 (děi) before the main verb to express that the subject must or has to do something. It indicates necessity driven by circumstances or personal judgment.

今天下课我得早点儿回家。

Jīntiān xiàkè wǒ děi zǎo diǎnr huí jiā.

After class today, I have to go home early.

时间不早了,我得回家了。

Shíjiān bù zǎo le, wǒ děi huí jiā le.

It's getting late — I have to go home.

你再忙也得好好吃饭啊!

Nǐ zài máng yě děi hǎohāo chīfàn a!

No matter how busy you are, you still have to eat properly!
