Separable Verbs (Verb-Object Compounds)

Verb-Complement Separable Compounds

动补式离合词:打开、看见、离开、完成 · dòngbǔ shì líhécí: dǎkāi, kànjiàn, líkāi, wánchéng

Use verb-complement compounds and understand how potential complements (得/不) split them apart

PatternVerb + 得/不 + ComplementVerb-complement compounds consist of a verb plus a result or direction complement. When expressing ability or inability, insert 得 (can) or 不 (cannot) between the verb and complement to form the potential complement pattern.

你的文件我打不开,你能再给我发一下儿吗?

Nǐ de wénjiàn wǒ dǎ bu kāi, nǐ néng zài gěi wǒ fā yíxiàr ma?

I can't open your file — could you send it to me again?

黑板上的字很小,我们都看不见。

Hēibǎn shang de zì hěn xiǎo, wǒmen dōu kàn bu jiàn.

The writing on the blackboard is so small that none of us can see it.

Non-Interrogative Use of Question Pronouns

Use question words like 谁, 什么, 哪儿, 怎么 in non-question contexts to express universal reference, indefinite reference, and correlative patterns

Pattern(1) QW + 都/也 (universal) | (2) QW...QW (correlative) | (3) QW as indefiniteQuestion pronouns in Chinese can be used outside of questions with three major functions: (1) universal reference with 都/也 meaning "everyone/everything/everywhere," (2) correlative patterns where two identical question words create "whatever...then..." meanings, and (3) indefinite reference meaning "someone/something/somewhere."

谁都喜欢她。

Shéi dōu xǐhuan tā.

Everyone likes her.

我吃什么都行。

Wǒ chī shénme dōu xíng.

I'm fine with eating anything.

Nǐ shénme shíhou lái dōu kěyǐ.

Demonstrative Pronouns: 各, 每, 任何

Nominal Measure Words

Use the verbal measure words 顿, 口, and 眼 to quantify actions like scolding, sipping, and glancing

PatternVerb + number + verbal measure wordVerbal measure words (动量词) quantify the occurrence or manner of an action rather than a noun. 顿 counts bouts or sessions (especially meals or scoldings), 口 counts mouthfuls or bites, and 眼 counts glances.

妈妈批评了他一顿。

Māma pīpíng le tā yí dùn.

Mom gave him a good scolding.

我们一起吃一顿饭吧。

Wǒmen yīqǐ chī yí dùn fàn ba.

Let's have a meal together.

他喝了一口水就走了。
