Compound: 不是……还/还是……

不是……,还/还是…… · búshì ... , hái / háishi ...

Express that something is not sufficient on its own and additional action or consideration is needed

Pattern不是 + A + 就可以了,还/还是 + BThis pattern states that merely doing A is not enough — there is still B that needs to happen. 不是 negates the sufficiency of the first action, while 还 or 还是 introduces the additional requirement or suggestion.

不是读完了就可以了,还应该写一篇作文。

Búshì dú wán le jiù kěyǐ le, hái yīnggāi xiě yī piān zuòwén.

It is not enough to just finish reading — you should also write an essay.

这事不是你想做就能做的,还是要听听老板的意见。

Zhè shì búshì nǐ xiǎng zuò jiù néng zuò de, háishi yào tīngting lǎobǎn de yìjiàn.

This is not something you can just do because you want to — you should listen to the boss's opinion.

不是道了歉就行了,还得用行动来证明。

Búshì dào le qiàn jiù xíng le, hái děi yòng xíngdòng lái zhèngmíng.

It is not enough to just apologize — you also need to prove it with actions.

Progressive Compound: 连……也/都……更/要……

连……也/都……,……更/要…… · lián ... yě/dōu ... , ... gèng/yào ...

Build a logical progression from an extreme example to an even stronger conclusion using 连……也/都……更/要……

Pattern连 + extreme example + 也/都 + A,(subject) + 更/要 + BFirst, present an extreme case using 连……也/都 to establish a baseline. Then, use 更 or 要 to draw an even stronger conclusion about another subject. The logic is: "Even X can't do it / does it, so Y even more so."

连大人也做不到,孩子更做不到。

Lián dàrén yě zuò bú dào, háizi gèng zuò bú dào.

Even adults cannot do it — children can do it even less.

连老人也喜欢看,孩子们更是喜欢得不得了。

Lián lǎorén yě xǐhuan kàn, háizimen gèng shì xǐhuan de bùdéliǎo.

Even elderly people like watching it — children like it even more.

连专家都解决不了这个问题,我们更不可能了。

Lián zhuānjiā dōu jiějué bù liǎo zhège wèntí, wǒmen gèng bù kěnéng le.

Even experts cannot solve this problem — we certainly cannot.

Selective Compound: 要么……要么……

要么……,要么…… · yàome ... , yàome ...

Present two alternatives or choices using the selective compound 要么……要么……

Pattern要么 + A,要么 + BUse 要么 before two options to present an either-or choice. The speaker is usually asking the listener to choose between the two, or describing a situation where only two possibilities exist.

你要么跟他一组,要么自己一个人一组,尽快决定吧。

Nǐ yàome gēn tā yī zǔ, yàome zìjǐ yī gè rén yī zǔ, jǐnkuài juédìng ba.

Either join his group or form a group by yourself — decide quickly.

面对困难,我们要么被它吓倒,要么战胜它。

Miànduì kùnnan, wǒmen yàome bèi tā xiàdǎo, yàome zhànshèng tā.

Facing difficulty, we either get intimidated by it or overcome it.

教室里的同学们要么在写作业,要么在小声讨论。

Jiàoshì lǐ de tóngxuémen yàome zài xiě zuòyè, yàome zài xiǎoshēng tǎolùn.

The classmates in the classroom are either doing homework or discussing quietly.

Concessive Compound: 虽……但/可/却/也……

虽……,但/可/却/也…… · suī ... , dàn/kě/què/yě ...

Master the concessive pattern 虽 with its four possible second-clause connectors: 但, 可, 却, and 也

Pattern(主语) + 虽 + A,但/可/却/也 + BThis is the literary version of 虽然……但是. The shortened 虽 (without 然) pairs with 但, 可, 却, or 也 to create a concessive ("although...but") relationship. Each connector carries a slightly different nuance.

他年纪虽小,但经验不少。

Tā niánjì suī xiǎo, dàn jīngyàn bù shǎo.

Although he is young, he has considerable experience.

我虽没得到奖励,可仍然对自己充满信心。

Wǒ suī méi dédào jiǎnglì, kě réngrán duì zìjǐ chōngmǎn xìnxīn.

Although I didn't get the reward, I still have confidence in myself.

他虽失败了,却仍然微笑面对。

Tā suī shībài le, què réngrán wēixiào miànduì.

Although he failed, he still faced it with a smile.

Hypothetical Compound: ……要不然……

……,要不然…… · ... , yàobùrán ...

Use 要不然 and its shortened forms 不然 to express "otherwise" in warnings, suggestions, and hypothetical consequences

Patternstatement/command + ,要不然/不然 + consequence/suggestionThe first clause states a condition, command, or situation. 要不然 or 不然 then introduces what will happen if the condition is not met, or offers an alternative suggestion. It functions like English "otherwise" or "or else."

大家要认真对待考试,要不然会影响毕业的。

Dàjiā yào rènzhēn duìdài kǎoshì, yàobùrán huì yǐngxiǎng bìyè de.

Everyone must take the exam seriously — otherwise it will affect graduation.

你不用太担心,不然我和你一起去。

Nǐ bùyòng tài dānxīn, bùrán wǒ hé nǐ yīqǐ qù.

Don't worry too much — otherwise, I'll go with you.

外面下雨了,不然我们明天再去吧。

Wàimiàn xiàyǔ le, bùrán wǒmen míngtiān zài qù ba.

It's raining outside — how about we go tomorrow instead.

Conditional Compound: 凡是……都……

凡是……,都…… · fánshì……, dōu……

Use 凡是...都... to express that something applies universally to every member of a category, without exception

Pattern凡是 + condition/category,都 + result/action凡是 introduces a universal condition — it marks every item in a group. 都 then states what applies to all of them. Together they form a sweeping generalization: "All who / everything that... without exception."

凡是听到高兴的事,他都和朋友分享。

Fánshì tīngdào gāoxìng de shì, tā dōu hé péngyou fēnxiǎng.

Whenever he hears happy news, he shares it with friends without exception.

凡是跟他合作,都能顺利完成任务。

Fánshì gēn tā hézuò, dōu néng shùnlì wánchéng rènwu.

Working with him always leads to smooth completion of tasks.

凡是对的,我们都应该坚持。

Fánshì duì de, wǒmen dōu yīnggāi jiānchí.

Everything that is right, we should uphold.

Concessive Compound: 就算/就是……也……

就算/就是……,也…… · jiùsuàn / jiùshì……, yě……

Use 就算/就是...也... to express concession — "even if X happens, Y still holds true"

Pattern就算/就是 + hypothetical condition,(subject) + 也 + result就算 or 就是 introduces a hypothetical or extreme condition. 也 in the second clause signals that the result holds regardless. The pattern conveys strong determination or inevitability.

就算成绩最好的同学也无法回答这个问题。

Jiùsuàn chéngjì zuì hǎo de tóngxué yě wúfǎ huídá zhège wèntí.

Even the top student cannot answer this question.

就是你想马上瘦下来也不能每天不吃饭。

Jiùshì nǐ xiǎng mǎshàng shòu xiàlái yě bù néng měitiān bù chīfàn.

Even if you want to lose weight immediately, you cannot skip meals every day.

就算他错了你也不能说他,他还小呢。

Jiùsuàn tā cuò le nǐ yě bù néng shuō tā, tā hái xiǎo ne.

Even if he is wrong, you cannot scold him — he is still young.
