Manner Adverbs: 不禁, 赶忙, 亲眼, 特地, 特意

方式副词:不禁、赶忙、亲眼、特地、特意 · fāngshì fùcí: bùjīn, gǎnmáng, qīnyǎn, tèdì, tèyì

Describe how actions are performed using five manner adverbs: involuntarily, hurriedly, with one's own eyes, specially, and deliberately

Pattern主语 + 不禁/赶忙/亲眼/特地/特意 + 动词Place the manner adverb before the main verb to describe how the action is carried out. 不禁 = involuntarily/can't help but; 赶忙 = hurriedly/hastily; 亲眼 = with one's own eyes; 特地 = specially/on purpose (going out of one's way); 特意 = deliberately/intentionally.

我不禁回忆起第一次跟她见面的场景。

Wǒ bùjīn huíyì qǐ dì yī cì gēn tā jiànmiàn de chǎngjǐng.

I couldn't help recalling the scene of our first meeting.

要迟到了,他赶忙出门,早饭都没吃。

Yào chídào le, tā gǎnmáng chūmén, zǎofàn dōu méi chī.

About to be late, he hurried out the door without even eating breakfast.

这件事是我亲眼所见,不会有假。

Zhè jiàn shì shì wǒ qīnyǎn suǒ jiàn, bú huì yǒu jiǎ.

I saw this with my own eyes — it cannot be fake.

Modal Adverb: 仿佛

情态副词:仿佛 · qíngtài fùcí: fǎngfú

Use 仿佛 to describe how something appears or feels, creating vivid comparisons and literary imagery

Pattern主语 + 仿佛 + (像/似的) + 描述Place 仿佛 before the description to express "as if" or "seemingly." It can stand alone or combine with 像, 似的, or 一样 for emphasis. The resulting phrase adds a literary, evocative quality.

奶奶仿佛孩子似的开心地笑了。

Nǎinai fǎngfú háizi shìde kāixīn de xiào le.

Grandma laughed happily, as if she were a child.

他工作起来仿佛不知道什么是累。

Tā gōngzuò qǐlái fǎngfú bù zhīdào shénme shì lèi.

When he works, it is as if he does not know what tiredness is.

那一刻,时间仿佛停止了。

Nà yí kè, shíjiān fǎngfú tíngzhǐ le.

At that moment, time seemed to stop.

Mood Adverbs: 才, 刚好, 偏, 恰好

语气副词:才³、刚好、偏、恰好 · yǔqì fùcí: cái, gānghǎo, piān, qiàhǎo

Express emphasis, coincidence, and contrariness using the mood adverbs 才, 刚好, 偏, and 恰好

Pattern主语 + 才/刚好/偏/恰好 + 动词/形容词Each adverb is placed before the verb or adjective. 才 (emphatic) adds defiance or insistence. 刚好 and 恰好 express fortunate coincidence. 偏 expresses doing something contrary to expectations or wishes.

我才不要父母的钱呢,我要自己赚钱。

Wǒ cái bú yào fùmǔ de qián ne, wǒ yào zìjǐ zhuànqián.

I absolutely do not want my parents' money — I want to earn my own.

我要出门找他的时候他刚好回来了。

Wǒ yào chūmén zhǎo tā de shíhou tā gānghǎo huílái le.

Just as I was about to go out looking for him, he happened to come back.

北方的冬天极其寒冷,可他圣诞节偏要去那儿旅行。

Běifāng de dōngtiān jíqí hánlěng, kě tā Shèngdànjié piān yào qù nàr lǚxíng.

Winters in the north are extremely cold, yet he insists on traveling there for Christmas.

Preposition: 于 (Formal Time & Place)

介词引出时间处所:于 · jiècí yǐnchū shíjiān chùsuǒ: yú

Use the formal preposition 于 to indicate time, place, and context in written and formal Chinese

Pattern动词 + 于 + 时间/地点Place 于 after the verb to introduce the time or location. Unlike 在, which comes before the verb in everyday speech, 于 follows the verb and belongs to formal, written registers.

他出生于1995年。

Tā chūshēng yú yī jiǔ jiǔ wǔ nián.

He was born in 1995.

大熊猫主要生活于中国西南地区。

Dà xióngmāo zhǔyào shēnghuó yú Zhōngguó xīnán dìqū.

Giant pandas mainly live in southwestern China.

这座城市建于公元前200年。

Zhè zuò chéngshì jiàn yú gōngyuán qián èr bǎi nián.

This city was built in 200 BC.

Preposition: 沿(着) (Along)

引出方向路径:沿(着) · yǐnchū fāngxiàng lùjìng: yán(zhe)

Use 沿(着) to describe movement along a path, route, river, or boundary

Pattern沿(着) + 路线/路径 + 动词Place 沿 or 沿着 before the path or route, followed by the action verb. 沿着 is more common in spoken Chinese; 沿 alone is slightly more concise and formal.

他喜欢沿着湖散步。

Tā xǐhuān yánzhe hú sànbù.

He likes to walk along the lake.

你沿这条路走,一会儿就到了。

Nǐ yán zhè tiáo lù zǒu, yíhuìr jiù dào le.

Go along this road and you will be there soon.

我沿着他指的路,很快找到了他家。

Wǒ yánzhe tā zhǐ de lù, hěn kuài zhǎodào le tā jiā.

Following the road he pointed out, I quickly found his home.

Prepositions: 同 & 与 (With — Formal)

Use the formal prepositions 同 and 与 to indicate "with" or "and" in written and formal contexts

Pattern同/与 + 对象 + 动词 (preposition) | 名词 + 同/与 + 名词 (conjunction)As prepositions, 同 and 与 are placed before the person or thing to indicate "with," similar to 跟 or 和. They are more formal and appear primarily in written language, speeches, and official contexts.

同你一样,我也是学生。

Tóng nǐ yíyàng, wǒ yě shì xuéshēng.

Same as you, I am also a student.

你要与同学搞好关系。

Nǐ yào yǔ tóngxué gǎohǎo guānxì.

You should maintain good relationships with your classmates.

我们公司与多家企业建立了合作关系。

Wǒmen gōngsī yǔ duō jiā qǐyè jiànlì le hézuò guānxì.

Our company has established cooperative relationships with many enterprises.

Preposition: 至于 (As For)

至于 · zhìyú

Use 至于 to shift topics smoothly, introducing a new but related aspect of a discussion

Pattern(先说A的情况,) 至于 + B + 描述/讨论Use 至于 at the beginning of a new clause to shift the topic to a related but different aspect. It signals "as for B…" after A has already been discussed.

旅行的时间已经定了,至于费用问题,还需要再讨论。

Lǚxíng de shíjiān yǐjīng dìng le, zhìyú fèiyòng wèntí, hái xūyào zài tǎolùn.

The travel dates are set; as for the costs, we still need to discuss them.

学校决定下个月举行运动会,至于具体时间,请等学校通知。

Xuéxiào juédìng xià ge yuè jǔxíng yùndònghuì, zhìyú jùtǐ shíjiān, qǐng děng xuéxiào tōngzhī.

The school has decided to hold a sports event next month; as for the exact date, please wait for the school's notice.

超市将于节日期间举行优惠活动,至于详细情况,可上网查看。

Chāoshì jiāng yú jiérì qījiān jǔxíng yōuhuì huódòng, zhìyú xiángxì qíngkuàng, kě shàngwǎng chákàn.

The supermarket will hold promotional events during the holiday; as for details, you can check online.
