Each adverb is placed before the verb or adjective. 才 (emphatic) adds defiance or insistence. 刚好 and 恰好 express fortunate coincidence. 偏 expresses doing something contrary to expectations or wishes.

This lesson covers 才 in its emphatic sense ("just / precisely / I insist"), not the time-related 才 ("not until"). 刚好 and 恰好 are near-synonyms — 恰好 is slightly more literary. 偏 conveys stubbornness or bad luck: things going against what was expected or desired.

Understanding 语气副词:才³、刚好、偏、恰好

These four mood adverbs give your Chinese emotional color and nuance. 才 in its emphatic sense expresses defiance or strong insistence — when you say 我才不要呢, you are firmly refusing with attitude, like saying "No way!" in English. 刚好 means "just right" or "happened to" — it signals a pleasant or neutral coincidence: 我刚好有两张票 (I happen to have two tickets). 恰好 carries the same meaning but feels more refined and literary, making it suitable for formal writing. 偏 is the rebel of the group — it expresses doing something contrary to advice, expectations, or common sense. When you say 我叫他别去,他偏要去, you are expressing frustration that someone stubbornly did the opposite. Together, these adverbs let you express subtle emotional attitudes that make your Chinese sound genuinely fluent.

Key Points

  • 才 (cái) — emphatic: expresses insistence or defiance. 我才不信呢!(I absolutely do not believe it!)
  • 刚好 (gānghǎo) = "just right / happens to / coincidentally" — neutral to positive coincidence.
  • 恰好 (qiàhǎo) = "coincidentally / just so" — same as 刚好 but more literary and formal.
  • 偏 (piān) = "contrary to expectations / insist on (despite)" — expresses stubbornness or bad luck.
  • 偏偏 is the doubled form of 偏 and emphasizes the frustration even more.
  • 才 + 不/没 + verb + 呢 is a very common pattern for emphatic refusal.
  • 刚好 can modify amounts: 刚好十块钱 (exactly ten yuan).

偏 reflects a common narrative theme in Chinese storytelling — the idea that fate or circumstance works against you. Phrases like 偏偏下雨了 (of all things, it had to rain) express a resigned acceptance of bad luck that resonates deeply in Chinese culture, where the concept of 命运 (fate) plays an important role.

刚好 expresses coincidence, not defiance. For emphatic refusal ("I absolutely do not want"), use 才不……呢.

他偏好回来了。
他刚好回来了。

偏 expresses something going against expectations, not a happy coincidence. For "he happened to come back" (a fortunate coincidence), use 刚好.
