"把" Sentences 3: Advanced Disposal Patterns

"把"字句3:表处置 · "bǎ" zìjù 3: biǎo chǔzhì

Master advanced 把-sentence patterns including directional disposal, swift action, completion, and purpose

Pattern(1) S + 把 + O + directional adverb + V (2) S + 把 + O + 一 + V (swift action) (3) S + 把 + O + V + 了 (completion) (4) S + 把 + O₁ + V + O₂ (purpose/use)These four advanced 把-sentence patterns expand on basic disposal. Pattern 1 adds a directional element (到处, 往回). Pattern 2 uses 一 before the verb for swift, decisive action. Pattern 3 is a simple completion pattern. Pattern 4 repurposes the object for a different use.

他总是把东西到处乱扔。

Tā zǒngshì bǎ dōngxi dàochù luàn rēng.

He always throws things everywhere randomly.

下雨了,她赶紧把外面的东西往回收。

Xià yǔ le, tā gǎnjǐn bǎ wàimiàn de dōngxi wǎng huí shōu.

It started raining — she quickly gathered the things outside back in.

她把东西一放,转身就走了。

Tā bǎ dōngxi yí fàng, zhuǎn shēn jiù zǒu le.

She set the things down and immediately turned and left.

Notional Passive 3: Passive Meaning Without 被

被动句3:意念被动句 · bèidòng jù 3: yìniàn bèidòng jù

Express passive meaning without using 被 by placing the patient (receiver of action) as the subject

PatternPatient (receiver) + V + resultative complement + 了In a notional passive sentence, the thing affected by the action becomes the subject, and no passive marker (被) is used. The verb typically has a resultative complement showing the completed result. The agent (doer) is either unknown, unimportant, or obvious from context.

蛋糕吃光了。

Dàngāo chī guāng le.

The cake has been all eaten up.

衣服穿破了。

Yīfu chuān pò le.

The clothes have been worn out.

车票卖完了。

Chēpiào mài wán le.

The bus tickets have all been sold.

Serial Verb Sentences 3: Cause-Effect, Concessive & Conditional

Pattern主语 + VP₁ + VP₂ (因果/转折/条件)Two verb phrases share the same subject and appear consecutively without any conjunction. Their logical relationship — cause-effect, concessive contrast, or enabling condition — is inferred from context rather than stated explicitly.

李老师生病住院了。

Lǐ lǎoshī shēngbìng zhùyuàn le.

Teacher Li got sick and was hospitalized.

这本书她借了没看。

Zhè běn shū tā jiè le méi kàn.

She borrowed this book but did not read it.

她有办法解决问题。

Tā yǒu bànfǎ jiějué wèntí.

She has a way to solve the problem.

Pivotal Sentences 3: Causative Constructions

兼语句3:表致使 · jiānyǔ jù sān: biǎo zhìshǐ

Use 叫, 令, 使, and 让 to express that someone causes another person to do something or feel a certain way

Pattern主语 + 叫/令/使/让 + 兼语(人) + VPThe subject causes (or makes) the pivotal noun (兼语) to perform the action in the VP. The pivotal noun serves as both the object of the causative verb and the subject of the following VP.

老师叫她早点儿回去。

Lǎoshī jiào tā zǎodiǎnr huíqù.

The teacher told her to go back early.

这件事令她吃不下饭。

Zhè jiàn shì lìng tā chī bù xià fàn.

This matter made her unable to eat.

他的做法使大家再也不敢相信他了。

Tā de zuòfǎ shǐ dàjiā zài yě bù gǎn xiāngxìn tā le.

His actions made everyone unable to trust him anymore.

Comparison Sentences 5: 跟…相比 & Adjective + Quantity Complement

比较句5 · bǐjiào jù wǔ

Make comparisons using 跟…相比 and the pattern A + adjective + B + quantity complement

Pattern(1) 跟 B 相比,A… (2) A + Adj + B + 数量补语Pattern 1: 跟…相比 means "compared with" and sets up a frame of reference for the comparison that follows. Pattern 2: A + adjective + B + quantity complement states a precise numerical difference between A and B.

跟上次考试相比,这次没有那么难。

Gēn shàng cì kǎoshì xiāngbǐ, zhè cì méiyǒu nàme nán.

Compared with the last exam, this one was not so hard.

跟别人相比,我的想法太简单了。

Gēn biéren xiāngbǐ, wǒ de xiǎngfǎ tài jiǎndān le.

Compared with others, my ideas are too simple.

跟语法知识相比,我觉得语音知识更难。

Gēn yǔfǎ zhīshi xiāngbǐ, wǒ juéde yǔyīn zhīshi gèng nán.

Selective Compound: 或是…或是…

或是……,或是…… · huòshì……, huòshì……

Present two or more alternatives using the formal selective pattern 或是…或是…

Pattern主语 + 或是 + A,或是 + BPresent two (or more) possible options or scenarios. The subject chooses or is associated with one of the alternatives. This pattern is more formal and written than 或者.

这件事或是哥哥做的,或是弟弟做的。

Zhè jiàn shì huòshì gēge zuò de, huòshì dìdi zuò de.

This was done either by the older brother or the younger brother.

你或是参加这次考试,或是明年再学一遍这门课。

Nǐ huòshì cānjiā zhè cì kǎoshì, huòshì míngnián zài xué yí biàn zhè mén kè.

Either you take this exam, or you study this course again next year.

周末我们或是去爬山,或是去看电影。

Zhōumò wǒmen huòshì qù páshān, huòshì qù kàn diànyǐng.

This weekend we will either go hiking or see a movie.

Concessive Compound: 尽管…但是/可是…

尽管……,但是/可是…… · jǐnguǎn……, dànshì / kěshì……

Express concession using 尽管 (even though) paired with 但是 or 可是 (but)

Pattern尽管 + clause₁,但是/可是 + clause₂尽管 introduces a conceded fact (something acknowledged as true), and 但是 or 可是 introduces the contrasting or unexpected result. The speaker acknowledges reality in clause₁ but emphasizes the point in clause₂.

尽管这次考试很难,但是很多人都通过了。

Jǐnguǎn zhè cì kǎoshì hěn nán, dànshì hěn duō rén dōu tōngguò le.

Even though this exam was very hard, many people passed.

尽管外面在下雨,可是他一定要去超市买东西。

Jǐnguǎn wàimiàn zài xiàyǔ, kěshì tā yídìng yào qù chāoshì mǎi dōngxi.

Even though it was raining outside, he insisted on going to the supermarket.

尽管他不接受我的意见,可是我有意见还是要向他提。

Jǐnguǎn tā bù jiēshòu wǒ de yìjiàn, kěshì wǒ yǒu yìjiàn háishì yào xiàng tā tí.

Even though he does not accept my opinions, I still need to raise them with him.
