"把" Sentences 3: Advanced Disposal Patterns
"把"字句3:表处置
Master advanced 把-sentence patterns including directional disposal, swift action, completion, and purpose
These four advanced 把-sentence patterns expand on basic disposal. Pattern 1 adds a directional element (到处, 往回). Pattern 2 uses 一 before the verb for swift, decisive action. Pattern 3 is a simple completion pattern. Pattern 4 repurposes the object for a different use.
Pattern 2 with 一 + V is especially vivid — it conveys a quick, decisive action often followed by another action. Pattern 4 is unusual because it has two objects: the thing disposed of (O₁) and what it is used for (O₂).

Understanding "把"字句3:表处置
You learned basic 把-sentences at HSK 3-4: 把书放在桌子上. Now you are mastering four advanced patterns that native speakers use constantly. First, directional disposal: 他把东西到处乱扔 (he throws things everywhere) — the directional word comes between 把-object and verb. Second, the swift action pattern: 她把东西一放,转身就走了 (she set the things down and immediately turned and left) — 一 before the verb makes the action feel quick and decisive, often leading to a follow-up action. Third, simple completion: 你怎么把这件事忘了?(How did you forget this?) — the 了 marks the completed disposal. Fourth, purpose disposal: 他把钱交学费了 (he used the money to pay tuition) — the first object is repurposed for the second. These patterns make your 把-sentences versatile and natural.
Key Points
- Pattern 1: 把 + O + directional word + V — disposal with direction (到处, 往回, 往外).
- Pattern 2: 把 + O + 一 + V — swift, decisive action, often followed by a second action.
- Pattern 3: 把 + O + V + 了 — simple completed disposal.
- Pattern 4: 把 + O₁ + V + O₂ — repurposing the first object for a new use.
- Pattern 2 is especially dramatic — great for storytelling and describing decisive moments.
- All patterns maintain the core 把 meaning: the subject deliberately acts upon the object.
The 把 + O + 一 + V pattern appears frequently in Chinese martial arts novels (武侠小说) and action narratives: 他把剑一拔,大声喊道…… (He drew his sword in one swift motion and shouted...). This decisive, dramatic quality makes it a favorite storytelling device in Chinese literature.

Common Mistakes
In Pattern 2, the object comes right after 把, then 一 + V: 把 + O + 一 + V. Do not put 一 before the object.
In Pattern 4, 了 goes at the end of the sentence after O₂, not between the verb and O₂.
In Pattern 1, the directional adverb (到处) goes between the 把-object and the verb, not before 把.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
Pattern 2 (一 + V) is your storytelling power tool — use it to create dramatic, decisive moments in narration.
Pattern 4 (repurposing) answers "what was the money/resource used for?" — think of it as 把 + resource + V + purpose.
When practicing, start with Pattern 3 (simplest: 把 + O + V + 了) and build up to Patterns 1 and 2.
Listen for 把……一…… in Chinese TV dramas — it appears in arguments, action scenes, and dramatic moments.
Homework
Write eight sentences — two for each pattern. For Pattern 2 (一 + V), create mini-narratives where the swift action leads to a follow-up action. For Pattern 4, describe how you or someone else used resources (money, time, materials) for a specific purpose.
