Adversative Complex Sentences

转折复句 · zhuǎnzhé fùjù

Express contrast or unexpected turns using adversative sentence patterns

Pattern虽然……但是/可是…… / 不过…… / clause1 + comma + contrasting clause2Adversative sentences present a contrast — the second clause contradicts or qualifies the expectation set by the first. Without connectors, the contrast is implied. With connectors, 虽然……但是/可是…… is the standard pattern, and 不过 offers a softer turn.

这件衣服样子不错,有点儿贵。

Zhè jiàn yīfu yàngzi búcuò, yǒudiǎnr guì.

This piece of clothing looks nice, but it is a bit expensive.

这次去饭店,我们花钱不多,吃得很不错。

Zhè cì qù fàndiàn, wǒmen huā qián bù duō, chī de hěn búcuò.

This time at the restaurant, we did not spend much but ate very well.

那个公园虽然不大,但是非常漂亮。

Hypothetical Complex Sentences

假设复句 · jiǎshè fùjù

Express hypothetical conditions and their results using "if… then…" patterns

Pattern如果……就…… / ……的话,就…… / condition clause + result clauseHypothetical sentences present a condition and its expected result. Without connectors, the condition clause comes first, followed by the result. With connectors, 如果……就…… is the standard pattern, and ……的话 can be appended to the condition for a casual "if… then…" feel.

明天下雨,我们在家休息。

Míngtiān xiàyǔ, wǒmen zài jiā xiūxi.

If it rains tomorrow, we will rest at home.

明天不下雨,我们出去玩儿。

Míngtiān bù xiàyǔ, wǒmen chūqù wánr.

If it does not rain tomorrow, we will go out and have fun.

如果你下午有时间,我们就一起去超市吧。

Rúguǒ nǐ xiàwǔ yǒu shíjiān, wǒmen jiù yìqǐ qù chāoshì ba.

Conditional: 只要……就…… (As Long As)

条件复句:只要……就…… · tiáojiàn fùjù: zhǐyào … jiù …

Express sufficient conditions using 只要……就…… (as long as… then…)

Pattern只要 + condition, 就 + result只要……就…… expresses that a condition is sufficient for a result to happen. "As long as X, then Y." The condition in the 只要 clause is all that is needed — nothing else is required.

只要你认真学习,就一定能取得好成绩。

Zhǐyào nǐ rènzhēn xuéxí, jiù yídìng néng qǔdé hǎo chéngjì.

As long as you study earnestly, you will definitely get good grades.

只要你通过这次考试,我就送你一件礼物。

Zhǐyào nǐ tōngguò zhè cì kǎoshì, wǒ jiù sòng nǐ yí jiàn lǐwù.

As long as you pass this exam, I will give you a gift.

只要天气好,我们就去爬山。

Zhǐyào tiānqì hǎo, wǒmen jiù qù pá shān.

As long as the weather is good, we will go hiking.

Causal Complex Sentences

因果复句 · yīnguǒ fùjù

Express cause and effect using causal sentence patterns with and without connectors

Pattern因为……所以…… / cause clause + result clauseCausal sentences explain WHY something happened. Without connectors, the cause clause comes first, followed by the result. With connectors, 因为……所以…… is the standard "because… therefore…" pattern.

我今天太忙了,午饭都没吃。

Wǒ jīntiān tài máng le, wǔfàn dōu méi chī.

I was too busy today — I did not even eat lunch.

那个学生病了,没来上课。

Nàge xuéshēng bìng le, méi lái shàngkè.

That student was sick and did not come to class.

因为很累,所以我今天不想做饭了。

Yīnwèi hěn lèi, suǒyǐ wǒ jīntiān bù xiǎng zuò fàn le.

Because I am very tired, I do not want to cook today.

Compact Complex: 一……就…… (As Soon As)

紧缩复句:一……就…… · jǐnsuō fùjù: yī … jiù …

Express immediate, automatic reactions using the 一……就…… pattern

Pattern主语 + 一 + verb1 + 就 + verb2一……就…… means "as soon as A, then immediately B." The two actions happen in rapid succession — the moment the first action occurs, the second follows immediately or automatically.

他一起床就去洗脸。

Tā yī qǐchuáng jiù qù xǐ liǎn.

As soon as he gets up, he goes to wash his face.

我一喝酒就脸红。

Wǒ yī hē jiǔ jiù liǎn hóng.

As soon as I drink alcohol, my face turns red.

她一听到这个消息就哭了。

Tā yī tīngdào zhège xiāoxi jiù kū le.

As soon as she heard the news, she cried.

Continuous Aspect: Verb + 着

持续态:动词+着 · chíxù tài: dòngcí + zhe

Describe ongoing states and continuous actions using the aspect particle 着

PatternVerb + 着 (state) / Verb + 着 + 呢 (action in progress)着 (zhe) is an aspect particle attached after a verb to indicate a CONTINUOUS state or an ONGOING action. For states, it means "is/are in the state of V-ing." For actions, it means "is/are V-ing." The negative form uses 没 before the verb.

灯一直亮着。

Dēng yìzhí liàng zhe.

The light has been on (this whole time).

灯没亮着。

Dēng méi liàng zhe.

The light is not on.

电脑开着。

Diànnǎo kāi zhe.

The computer is on.
