/ / / clause1 + comma + contrasting clause2

Adversative sentences present a contrast — the second clause contradicts or qualifies the expectation set by the first. Without connectors, the contrast is implied. With connectors, 虽然……但是/可是…… is the standard pattern, and 不过 offers a softer turn.

虽然 always goes in the FIRST clause (the concession). 但是 and 可是 are interchangeable — 但是 is slightly more formal. 不过 is gentler and often used to add a qualification after a positive statement.

Understanding

Life is full of "buts" — the food was great BUT expensive, the apartment is small BUT comfortable. Chinese adversative sentences handle these contrasts beautifully. Without connectors, you simply place two contrasting clauses together: 这件衣服样子不错,有点儿贵 (This clothing looks nice — a bit pricey though). The listener understands the contrast from context. For explicit contrast, use 虽然…… (Although the park is not big, it is very beautiful). The 虽然 clause sets up the expectation, and the 但是/可是 clause flips it. For a softer contrast, use (This room is not very big, but it is quite comfortable to live in). 不过 feels like a gentle "however" rather than a hard "but."

Key Points

  • Without connectors: two contrasting clauses separated by a comma.
= "although… but…" — standard adversative pattern.
= same meaning, slightly less formal.
  • 不过 = "however / but" — softer, used for mild qualification.
  • 虽然 goes in the FIRST clause, 但是/可是 in the SECOND clause.
  • Unlike English, Chinese uses BOTH "although" AND "but" together — this is correct!
  • 虽然 can come before or after the subject in its clause.
  • You can drop 虽然 and keep 但是/可是 alone — but not the reverse.

Chinese speakers often use adversative patterns to give balanced opinions — acknowledging both good and bad sides. This reflects the cultural value of moderation and seeing both sides of a situation. (Although expensive, the quality is great) sounds more thoughtful than just saying something is expensive.
