Sequential Complex Sentences

承接复句 · chéngjiē fùjù

Describe actions that happen one after another using sequential sentence patterns

Pattern先……再/然后…… or clause1 + comma + clause2Sequential sentences describe actions happening in order. You can list them without connectors (relying on comma separation) or use 先……再/然后…… to make the sequence explicit.

吃了晚饭，我们出去走走。

Chī le wǎnfàn, wǒmen chūqù zǒuzou.

After eating dinner, we will go for a walk.

他回房间拿了衣服，去教室上课了。

Tā huí fángjiān ná le yīfu, qù jiàoshì shàngkè le.

He went back to his room to get clothes, then went to class.

你先去超市买东西，再回家。

Nǐ xiān qù chāoshì mǎi dōngxi, zài huí jiā.

First go to the supermarket to buy things, then go home.

Progressive Complex Sentences

递进复句 · dìjìn fùjù

Build sentences that escalate or intensify a point using progressive patterns

Pattern不但……而且…… / 更/还 + adjective/verbProgressive sentences take an initial statement and push it further. The second clause goes beyond the first — "not only X, but also Y" or "even more so." Without connectors, context and adverbs like 更 or 还 show the escalation.

那个地方我去过了，去过两次了。

Nàge dìfang wǒ qùguo le, qùguo liǎng cì le.

I have been to that place — been there twice, actually.

他弟弟会说中文，说得很流利。

Tā dìdi huì shuō Zhōngwén, shuō de hěn liúlì.

His younger brother can speak Chinese — speaks it fluently.

昨天很冷，今天更冷了。

Zuótiān hěn lěng, jīntiān gèng lěng le.

Yesterday was cold; today is even colder.

Alternative Complex Sentences

选择复句 · xuǎnzé fùjù

Present choices between options using alternative sentence structures

Pattern(是)……还是…… or option A + comma + option B + question markAlternative sentences present two or more choices. Without connectors, you simply list the options with a questioning tone. With connectors, use (是)……还是…… to explicitly frame an either-or question.

这次旅行你坐火车，坐飞机？

Zhè cì lǚxíng nǐ zuò huǒchē, zuò fēijī?

For this trip, are you taking the train or the plane?

我们星期六去，星期天去？

Wǒmen xīngqīliù qù, xīngqītiān qù?

Are we going Saturday or Sunday?

你是坐火车来的，还是坐飞机来的？

Nǐ shì zuò huǒchē lái de, háishi zuò fēijī lái de?
