Progressive Complex Sentences
递进复句
Build sentences that escalate or intensify a point using progressive patterns
Progressive sentences take an initial statement and push it further. The second clause goes beyond the first — "not only X, but also Y" or "even more so." Without connectors, context and adverbs like 更 or 还 show the escalation.
不但……而且…… is the formal pair, while 更 (even more) and 还 (also/additionally) are used for informal or simpler progressive statements.

Understanding 递进复句
Progressive sentences are like climbing stairs — each step goes higher. When you say 那个地方我去过了,去过两次了, you are escalating from "I have been there" to "I have been there TWICE." When you say 昨天很冷,今天更冷了, you are saying today is even colder than yesterday. The formal pattern 不但……而且…… works like English "not only… but also…" — 她不但会说中文,而且说得很好 (She not only speaks Chinese, but speaks it well). The key insight is that the second clause always goes FURTHER than the first. It adds more, intensifies, or surprises. This is a powerful rhetorical tool — use it to emphasize achievements, describe escalating situations, or add impressive details.
Key Points
- Without connectors: the second clause naturally escalates beyond the first.
- 更 (gèng) = "even more" — directly compares and escalates: 今天更冷了.
- 还 (hái) = "also / additionally" — adds another layer: 还经常帮助同学.
- 不但……而且…… = "not only… but also…" — the classic progressive pair.
- In 不但……而且……, the more impressive or important point goes in the 而且 clause.
- When the subject is the same in both clauses, 不但 comes AFTER the subject.
- When the subjects differ, 不但 comes BEFORE the first subject.
- 而且 can sometimes be replaced by 还 in casual speech: 不但会唱歌,还会跳舞.
Chinese rhetoric loves escalation. When praising someone, progressive sentences help you build up — starting with a good quality and then revealing something even more impressive. This matches the cultural preference for showing admiration through layers of compliment.
