Negation: 不, 没, & 别

否定副词 · fǒudìng fùcí

Negate actions and states correctly

Pattern不 + V/Adj (present/habitual); 没(有) + V (past/experience); 别 + V (imperative)不 negates habitual actions, states, and willingness. 没(有) negates completed or experienced actions. 别 is a command meaning "don't."

今天不热。

Jīntiān bú rè.

It's not hot today.

我不喜欢吃辣的。

Wǒ bù xǐhuān chī là de.

I don't like eating spicy food.

他没吃早饭。

Tā méi chī zǎofàn.

He didn't eat breakfast.

Separable Verbs (离合词)

离合词 · líhécí

Use verb-object compounds that split apart in real sentences

PatternV + (modifier) + O ← inside one "word"A 离合词 looks like one verb (看病, 睡觉, 上课…) but is actually a verb + object glued together. When you add time, frequency, or aspect, the two halves SEPARATE and the modifier slips between them.

我每天晚上十一点睡觉。

Wǒ měi tiān wǎnshang shíyī diǎn shuìjiào.

I go to sleep at 11 p.m. every night.

昨天我睡了八个小时的觉。

Zuótiān wǒ shuì le bā gè xiǎoshí de jiào.

I slept eight hours yesterday.

我们八点上课,十点下课。

Wǒmen bā diǎn shàngkè, shí diǎn xiàkè.

We start class at eight and finish at ten.

Preposition: 在 (at/in)

介词:在 · jiècí: zài

Say where an action takes place

PatternSubject + 在 + place + VUse 在 before a location to indicate where an action happens. The 在 + place phrase comes before the verb.

哥哥在北京学中文。

Gēge zài Běijīng xué zhōngwén.

My older brother studies Chinese in Beijing.

他在手机上看电影。

Tā zài shǒujī shàng kàn diànyǐng.

He watches movies on his phone.

妈妈在厨房做饭。

Māma zài chúfáng zuòfàn.

Mom is cooking in the kitchen.
