Preposition: 在 (at/in)
介词:在
Say where an action takes place
Use 在 before a location to indicate where an action happens. The 在 + place phrase comes before the verb.
Don't confuse the preposition 在 (at a place doing something) with the verb 在 (to be at a place). The preposition always has a verb after the location.

Understanding 介词:在
Need to say where something happens? That's 在's job. Unlike English where we say "I study at school" (location at the end), Chinese flips it: 我在学校学习 — literally "I at school study." The location always comes before the action. Once you get this word order down, you'll be able to describe anyone doing anything anywhere. Think of it like a movie scene: Chinese sets the location first (the backdrop), then the action (what happens in front of it). This "setting before action" principle runs deep in Chinese grammar and will pop up again and again as you learn more.
Key Points
- As a preposition, 在 marks the location where an action occurs: 我在图书馆看书 (I read at the library).
- The order is always: Subject + 在 + place + verb. Location before action!
- As a standalone verb, 在 means "to be at": 他在家 (He is at home) — no second verb needed.
- 在 can also indicate "on" a device or platform: 在手机上 (on the phone), 在网上 (online).
- For surfaces, add 上 after the location: 在桌子上 (on the table).
- For inside spaces, you can add 里 after the location: 在房间里 (in the room), 在书包里 (in the backpack).
- 在 + 哪儿 is the go-to pattern for asking "where": 你在哪儿?(Where are you?), 在哪儿买的?(Where did you buy it?).
- In the progressive construction, 在 means "in the middle of doing": 他在吃饭 (He is eating right now).
When you call someone in China and ask 你在哪儿?(Where are you?), it's a perfectly normal, non-invasive question. Friends ask this constantly to coordinate meetups.

Common Mistakes
In Chinese, the 在 + place phrase must come before the verb, not after it. This is the opposite of English word order.
For flat surfaces, you need to add 上 after the noun to indicate "on."
The location must directly follow 在, before the verb. Don't split them up.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
Golden rule for 在: LOCATION BEFORE ACTION. If you remember this, you'll get the word order right every time.
When you need "on" something (phone, table, internet), use 在 + noun + 上.
Practice with your daily routine: 我在卧室睡觉, 我在厨房做饭, 我在办公室工作 — anchor each action to a place.
Three little helpers: 上 (on), 里 (in), 下 (under). These go after the noun inside a 在 phrase: 在桌子上, 在房间里, 在床下.
The question 你在哪儿 is your Swiss Army knife: add any verb after it and you can ask where anyone does anything. 你在哪儿吃饭?你在哪儿住?
