Introducing the Other Party: 和 & 对

介词：和/对 · jiècí: hé / duì

Use 和 / 对 to mark the person an action is done WITH or TOWARDS

PatternSubject + 和/对 + person + VBoth 和 and 对 are prepositions that introduce the other party of an action. 和 means "with" (joint action — eat, study, go); 对 means "to / towards" (action directed AT someone — smile at, say to, be good to).

我和姐姐一起去中国。

Wǒ hé jiějie yìqǐ qù Zhōngguó.

My sister and I are going to China together.

她对我笑了。

Tā duì wǒ xiào le.

She smiled at me.

我们和老师一起吃饭。

Wǒmen hé lǎoshī yìqǐ chīfàn.

We had a meal with the teacher.

Drop 是 and let a noun, number, or age stand as the predicate

PatternSubject + (NEG/ADV) + Noun-predicateIn casual Chinese, a noun, number, age, time, weight, price, or nationality can ITSELF serve as the predicate — no verb 是 needed. "Today (is) Monday" becomes 今天星期一; "I (am) twenty" becomes 我二十岁.

今天星期一。

Jīntiān xīngqīyī.

Today is Monday.

我二十岁。

Wǒ èrshí suì.

I am twenty years old.

现在三点半。

Xiànzài sān diǎn bàn.

It's 3:30 right now.

Connect nouns and offer choices

PatternA 和/跟 B (and); A 还是 B？ (or — in questions)和 and 跟 connect nouns like "and." 还是 presents alternatives in a question and means "or."

Bàba gēn māma dōu bú zài jiā.
