Structural Particle: 的

结构助词:的 · jiégòu zhùcí: de

Use 的 to attach modifiers and ownership to nouns

PatternModifier + 的 + noun的 is the connector that attaches ANY descriptive material — an adjective, a possessor, a verb phrase, even a whole clause — to the noun it modifies.

你的衣服很好看。

Nǐ de yīfu hěn hǎokàn.

Your clothes look great.

这是妈妈做的菜。

Zhè shì māma zuò de cài.

This is the dish Mom made.

漂亮的花开了。

Piàoliang de huā kāi le.

The beautiful flowers bloomed.

The 了 Particle: Completed Actions

动态助词:了 · dòngtài zhùcí: le

Mark completed actions with 了

PatternSubject + V + 了 (+ object)了 placed after a verb indicates that the action has been completed. This is the verb-了, marking realization or completion of an action.

他买了一本书。

Tā mǎi le yì běn shū.

He bought a book.

我写了两个汉字。

Wǒ xiě le liǎng gè hànzì.

I wrote two Chinese characters.

她吃了一碗面。

Tā chī le yì wǎn miàn.

She ate a bowl of noodles.

Sentence Particles: 吧, 了, 吗, 呢

语气助词 · yǔqì zhùcí

Sound natural with suggestion, change, question, and ongoing-tone particles

Patternsentence + 吧 / 了 / 吗 / 呢These particles sit at the end of a sentence and change its mood or tone. They are the seasoning of Chinese conversation.

我们走吧。

Wǒmen zǒu ba.

Let's go.

她是医生吗?

Tā shì yīshēng ma?

Is she a doctor?

我在看书呢。

Wǒ zài kànshū ne.

I'm reading (right now).

Quantity Phrases

数量短语 · shùliàng duǎnyǔ

Produce clean number + measure word chunks

Patternnumber + measure word + nounIn Chinese, you cannot put a number directly before a noun. You must insert a measure word (量词) between them. Every noun has a preferred measure word.
