The Subject

主语 · zhǔyǔ

Identify and use subjects correctly in Chinese sentences

PatternSubject + PredicateThe subject is the "who" or "what" that the sentence is about. In Chinese, the subject comes first and the predicate (verb phrase, adjective, or noun phrase) follows.

他在看电视。

Tā zài kàn diànshì.

He is watching TV.

这个房间很干净。

Zhè ge fángjiān hěn gānjìng.

The Predicate

谓语 · wèiyǔ

Understand what the subject 'does' or 'is'

PatternSubject + Predicate (verb / adjective / noun phrase)The predicate is the engine of a Chinese sentence. It tells you what the subject does, how it feels, or what it is. Verbs, adjectives, and even noun phrases can all serve as predicates.

我们学中文。

Wǒmen xué Zhōngwén.

We study Chinese.

今天不冷。

Jīntiān bù lěng.

Today is not cold.

The Object

宾语 · bīnyǔ

Place objects correctly after verbs

PatternSubject + Verb + ObjectThe object receives the action of the verb. In Chinese, the object always comes right after the verb — just like a package being handed over.

他吃面包。

Tā chī miànbāo.

He eats bread.

她买了一个手机。

Tā mǎi le yī gè shǒujī.

She bought a phone.

我喜欢你。

Attributive Modifiers

定语 · dìngyǔ

Describe nouns with modifiers before them

PatternModifier (+ 的) + NounAttributive modifiers sit in front of the noun they describe — like a label or tag. Short, simple modifiers skip 的; longer or more complex ones need it.

新书包很好看。

Xīn shūbāo hěn hǎokàn.

The new backpack looks great.

我喜欢干净的房间。

Wǒ xǐhuān gānjìng de fángjiān.

I like clean rooms.

Adverbial Modifiers

状语 · zhuàngyǔ

Put time, place, and manner before the verb

PatternSubject + Time / Place / Manner + VerbAdverbial modifiers set the scene for the verb. They answer when, where, or how something happens — and they always come before the verb.

他十点睡觉。

Tā shí diǎn shuìjiào.

He goes to sleep at 10.

我们下午去吧。

Wǒmen xiàwǔ qù ba.

Let's go in the afternoon.
