Place 反倒 before the verb to indicate that the result is the opposite of what was expected. It often works with a preceding clause that establishes the expectation.

反倒 (also written 反倒是) is close in meaning to 反而 but tends to carry a stronger tone of surprise, irony, or complaint. It is very common in spoken Chinese.

Understanding 语气副词:反倒

反倒 literally means "on the contrary" or "instead." It signals that the actual outcome is the opposite of what logic or circumstances would predict. If you expect A to happen but B happens instead, 反倒 marks that surprising reversal. For instance, 明明是你的错,怎么反倒怪我了?(It is clearly your fault — how come you are blaming me instead?) shows the speaker is surprised and indignant that the blame went in the wrong direction. 反倒 is interchangeable with 反而 in most cases, but 反倒 sounds more colloquial and carries more emotional punch. It is a favourite in arguments, complaints, and storytelling.

Key Points

  • 反倒 (fǎndào) = "on the contrary / instead / unexpectedly" — marks a result opposite to expectation.
  • Very similar to 反而, but more colloquial and emotionally charged.
  • Often preceded by a clause setting up the expectation: 明明……, 虽然……, 越是…….
  • Can express surprise, irony, complaint, or admiration depending on context.
  • Frequently used in spoken arguments and storytelling.
  • The pattern 越是 A 反倒越 B is especially common: the more A, the more unexpectedly B.
  • Can also appear as 反倒是 for slight emphasis.

Chinese speakers often use 反倒 to express the irony of a situation — when reality defies common sense. This rhetorical technique is deeply rooted in Chinese storytelling traditions, where plot twists and unexpected outcomes make narratives compelling.

Common Mistakes

我反倒去了学校。
我本来不想去学校,反倒去了。

反倒 requires context that sets up the expected outcome. Without a contrasting expectation, the sentence does not make sense.

他反倒很高。
他年纪最小,个子反倒最高。

The sentence needs a contrasting first clause to establish what was expected — otherwise 反倒 has nothing to contrast against.

他反倒不反而来了。
他反倒来了。

反倒 and 反而 are synonyms — do not use them together. Choose one.

Tips & Tricks

1

Always set up the expectation first, then use 反倒 to reveal the surprise: "I expected A, but 反倒 B happened."

2

Use 越是……反倒越…… for the powerful pattern "the more X, the more unexpectedly Y."

3

In arguments, 反倒 is your weapon for pointing out irony: "I am the victim, but you 反倒 blame me!"

Compare: 反而 (neutral, written) vs. 反倒 (emotional, spoken) — both mean "on the contrary."
