The 不A不B Pattern

不A不B · bù A bù B

Use the four-character pattern 不A不B to express "neither A nor B" or "just right — not too much of either extreme"

Pattern不 + A + 不 + BA and B are typically antonyms or related adjectives. The pattern expresses either "neither A nor B" (neutral/just right) or a negative evaluation (neither one thing nor the other).

这件衣服不大不小,正合适。

Zhè jiàn yīfu bú dà bù xiǎo, zhèng héshì.

This piece of clothing is neither too big nor too small — it fits perfectly.

今天的天气不冷不热,很舒服。

Jīntiān de tiānqì bù lěng bú rè, hěn shūfu.

Today's weather is neither cold nor hot — very comfortable.

这条裤子不长不短,我很喜欢。

Zhè tiáo kùzi bù cháng bù duǎn, wǒ hěn xǐhuan.

These pants are neither too long nor too short — I like them a lot.

Fixed Phrase: 看起来 (Looks Like / Appears)

看起来 · kàn qǐlái

Use 看起来 to express how something appears or seems based on overall impression

Pattern(Subject +) 看起来 + Adjective / Clause看起来 means "looks like" or "appears to be." It can come before or after the subject and is followed by an adjective or descriptive clause expressing how something seems.

这些苹果看起来很好吃。

Zhèxiē píngguǒ kàn qǐlái hěn hǎochī.

These apples look very delicious.

她工作了一天,看起来有点儿累。

Tā gōngzuò le yì tiān, kàn qǐlái yǒudiǎnr lèi.

She worked all day and looks a bit tired.

看起来今天不会下雨。

Kàn qǐlái jīntiān bú huì xiàyǔ.

It looks like it won't rain today.

Fixed Phrase: 看上去 (Looks / Appears)

看上去 · kàn shàngqù

Use 看上去 to describe how something looks based on visual impression, and distinguish it from 看起来

Pattern(Subject +) 看上去 + Adjective / Clause看上去 means "looks" or "appears" with a slight emphasis on what you see visually. It functions the same way as 看起来 grammatically but carries a nuance of direct visual observation.

这件衣服看上去很不错。

Zhè jiàn yīfu kàn shàngqù hěn búcuò.

This piece of clothing looks quite nice.

那沙发看上去非常结实。

Nà shāfā kàn shàngqù fēicháng jiēshi.

That sofa looks very sturdy.

她看上去只有二十岁。

Tā kàn shàngqù zhǐ yǒu èrshí suì.

She looks like she is only twenty years old.

Fixed Phrase: 有的是 (There's Plenty Of)

有的是 · yǒu de shì

Use 有的是 to emphasize abundance — that there is plenty of something

Pattern(Place/Person +) 有的是 + Noun / Noun + 有的是有的是 is a fixed phrase meaning "there is plenty of" or "there is no shortage of." The noun can come after 有的是, or 有的是 can come after the noun for emphasis.

咱们图书馆有的是书,你可以多看看。

Zánmen túshūguǎn yǒu de shì shū, nǐ kěyǐ duō kànkan.

Our library has plenty of books — you can read more.

这儿水果有的是,你多拿一点儿。

Zhèr shuǐguǒ yǒu de shì, nǐ duō ná yìdiǎnr.

There is plenty of fruit here — take some more.

别着急,时间有的是。

Bié zhāojí, shíjiān yǒu de shì.

Don't worry — there is plenty of time.

Pattern: 除了……(以外),……还/也/都……

除了……(以外),……还/也/都…… · chúle……(yǐwài), ……hái/yě/dōu……

Use the 除了 pattern to express "besides X, also Y" (inclusive) and "except for X, all Y" (exclusive)

Pattern除了 + X + (以外),Subject + 还/也/都 + PredicateThis pattern has two uses: (1) Inclusive — "besides X, also Y" (with 还/也): 除了中文,我还会说英文. (2) Exclusive — "except for X, all Y" (with 都): 除了他,我们都去了. 以外 is optional and adds formality.

除了上课,我还要参加各种活动。

Chúle shàngkè, wǒ hái yào cānjiā gè zhǒng huódòng.

Besides attending classes, I also have to participate in various activities.

除了我,我姐姐和弟弟也会说中文。

Chúle wǒ, wǒ jiějie hé dìdi yě huì shuō Zhōngwén.

Besides me, my older sister and younger brother can also speak Chinese.

除了北京以外,中国的其他城市我都没去过。

Chúle Běijīng yǐwài, Zhōngguó de qítā chéngshì wǒ dōu méi qùguo.

Except for Beijing, I have not been to any other Chinese cities.

Pattern: 从……起 (Starting From)

从……起 · cóng……qǐ

Use the 从……起 pattern to mark a starting point in time for an action or situation

Pattern从 + Time/Event + 起,Subject + Predicate从……起 marks a temporal starting point — "starting from" a specific time or event. The clause after it describes what happens from that point onward.

从现在起,你要努力学习了。

Cóng xiànzài qǐ, nǐ yào nǔlì xuéxí le.

Starting from now, you need to study hard.

从今天起,我就用这台新电脑了。

Cóng jīntiān qǐ, wǒ jiù yòng zhè tái xīn diànnǎo le.

Starting from today, I will use this new computer.

从明天起,图书馆的开放时间改了。

Cóng míngtiān qǐ, túshūguǎn de kāifàng shíjiān gǎi le.

Starting from tomorrow, the library's opening hours have changed.
