Correctly position action measure complements when they co-occur with objects

Patternverb + object + number + measure word / verb + number + measure word + objectWhen a verb takes both an object and an action measure complement (indicating how many times), the word order depends on the type of object. For pronoun objects or short definite objects, the object comes before the measure complement. For longer or indefinite noun objects, the measure complement can come before the object.

我找了他两次。

Wǒ zhǎo le tā liǎng cì.

I looked for him twice.

我来过中国一次。

Wǒ lái guo Zhōngguó yī cì.

I have been to China once.

我去过两次上海。

Wǒ qù guo liǎng cì Shànghǎi.

I have been to Shanghai twice.

Duration Complement: How Long an Action Lasts

数量补语4(动词+时量补语):表示动作持续的时间 · shùliàng bǔyǔ (dòngcí + shíliàng bǔyǔ): biǎoshì dòngzuò chíxù de shíjiān

Express how long an action lasts using a duration complement after the verb

Pattern主语 + 动词 + (了) + 时量补语 (+ 的 + 宾语)Place the duration expression after the verb (and 了 if the action is completed) to indicate how long the action lasted or has been lasting. When the verb has an object, you may repeat the verb or restructure with 的.

我学中文学了两年。

Wǒ xué Zhōngwén xué le liǎng nián.

I have studied Chinese for two years.

我等了他半个多小时。

Wǒ děng le tā bàn ge duō xiǎoshí.

I waited for him for more than half an hour.

我们等了他半个多小时。

Wǒmen děng le tā bàn ge duō xiǎoshí.

We waited for him for more than half an hour.

Duration Complement: Interval After Action Completion

数量补语5(动词+时量补语):表示动作结束后到某个时间点的间隔时间 · shùliàng bǔyǔ (dòngcí + shíliàng bǔyǔ): biǎoshì dòngzuò jiéshù hòu dào mǒu ge shíjiān diǎn de jiàngé shíjiān

Express how much time has elapsed since an action was completed

Pattern主语 + 动词 + (宾语) + 时量 + 了Place the duration after the verb (and its object if any), then add 了 at the end of the sentence. This indicates how much time has passed since the action occurred.

他们来中国两个月了。

Tāmen lái Zhōngguó liǎng ge yuè le.

They have been in China for two months (since they came).

哥哥去北京一个星期了。

Gēge qù Běijīng yí ge xīngqī le.

It has been a week since my older brother went to Beijing.

我父母结婚二十年了。

Wǒ fùmǔ jiéhūn èrshí nián le.

My parents have been married for twenty years.

Subject-Predicate Predicate Sentences

主谓句4:主谓谓语句 · zhǔwèijù: zhǔwèi wèiyǔ jù

Build sentences where the predicate itself is a subject-predicate phrase

Pattern大主语 + 小主语 + 谓语The sentence has a "big subject" (topic of the whole sentence) and a "small subject" (the subject within the predicate clause). The small subject + its predicate together function as the predicate of the big subject.

奶奶身体非常好。

Nǎinai shēntǐ fēicháng hǎo.

Grandma is in very good health.

这件衣服颜色很好看。

Zhè jiàn yīfu yánsè hěn hǎokàn.

This piece of clothing has a beautiful color.

那本书我没看过。

Nà běn shū wǒ méi kànguo.

That book — I have not read it.

把-Sentences 1: Expressing Disposal and Placement

"把"字句1:表处置 · "bǎ" zì jù: biǎo chǔzhì

Use 把 to express what is done to a specific object — moving, giving, or changing it

Pattern主语 + 把 + 宾语 + 动词 + 其他成分 (在/到/给/结果补语/趋向补语)The 把 construction brings the object before the verb to emphasize what happens to it. The verb must be followed by additional information — a location (在/到), an indirect object (给), a result complement, a directional complement, or a descriptive complement.

老师把书放在桌子上了。

Lǎoshī bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng le.

The teacher put the book on the table.

我把朋友送到车站了。

Wǒ bǎ péngyou sòng dào chēzhàn le.

I took my friend to the train station.

爸爸把新买的手机送给妹妹了。

Bàba bǎ xīn mǎi de shǒujī sòng gěi mèimei le.

Dad gave the newly bought phone to my younger sister.
