Duration Complement: How Long an Action Lasts
数量补语4(动词+时量补语):表示动作持续的时间
Express how long an action lasts using a duration complement after the verb
Place the duration expression after the verb (and 了 if the action is completed) to indicate how long the action lasted or has been lasting. When the verb has an object, you may repeat the verb or restructure with 的.
When the verb takes an object, there are two main patterns: (1) Repeat the verb — 他游泳游了四十分钟; (2) Use 的 — 他游了四十分钟的泳. For pronoun objects, the pronoun usually comes before the duration: 我等了他半个多小时.

Understanding 数量补语4(动词+时量补语):表示动作持续的时间
The duration complement tells us how long an action continues or continued. In English we say "I studied for two hours" — the duration comes at the end with "for." In Chinese, the duration expression goes right after the verb: 我学了两个小时. The tricky part is handling objects. If the verb has an object, you cannot simply place both the duration and the object after the verb. Instead, you either repeat the verb (我学中文学了两年) or restructure the sentence. This is one of the most practical grammar points in daily Chinese because you constantly need to say how long you slept, worked, waited, or studied. Mastering this pattern will make your Chinese sound significantly more natural and detailed.
Key Points
- Basic pattern without object: 主语 + 动词 + 了 + 时量 — 我睡了八个小时.
- With a noun object, repeat the verb: 我学中文学了两年 or front the object: 中文我学了两年.
- Alternative: 动词 + 了 + 时量 + 的 + 宾语 — 他游了四十分钟的泳.
- With a pronoun object, the pronoun goes before the duration: 我等了他半个多小时.
- 了 after the verb indicates the action has been completed or has reached a certain point.
- For ongoing actions, use 了 at the end of the sentence: 我学中文学了两年了 (and I am still learning).
- Common time expressions: 半个小时, 一个多小时, 两年, 四十分钟, 一整天.
Chinese people often use duration complements to express dedication or effort. Saying 我学中文学了三年 not only states a fact but subtly shows your commitment. In conversation, this is a great way to impress native speakers with your perseverance.

Common Mistakes
You cannot place the duration between the verb and a noun object directly. Either repeat the verb or use the 的 structure.
For verb-object compounds like 游泳, you must repeat the verb part (游) and attach the duration after the repeated verb.
Pronoun objects go before the duration complement, not after it.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
When in doubt, repeat the verb — it always works: 看书看了两个小时, 学中文学了三年.
Pronoun objects are easier — they go right after the verb and before the duration: 等了他三个小时.
If the action is still ongoing, add 了 at the end of the sentence: 我学了两年了 (and still studying).
Practice with your daily routine: how long you sleep, work, study, exercise, and commute.
Homework
Write ten sentences about your typical day, stating how long you do each activity. Include at least three sentences with verb-object compounds (like 游泳, 跑步, 看书) and two with pronoun objects.
