Action Measure Complement with Objects
数量补语3(动词+动量补语):宾语和动量补语共现
Correctly position action measure complements when they co-occur with objects
When a verb takes both an object and an action measure complement (indicating how many times), the word order depends on the type of object. For pronoun objects or short definite objects, the object comes before the measure complement. For longer or indefinite noun objects, the measure complement can come before the object.
Common action measure words: 次 (times), 遍 (from start to finish), 趟 (trips), 下 (quick actions). Pronoun objects always precede the measure complement: 找了他两次, never 找了两次他.

Action measure complements tell you how many times an action was performed. The tricky part at this level is figuring out where to put them when there is also an object in the sentence. Chinese has clear rules for this. When the object is a pronoun (他, 她, 我), the pronoun always comes first: 我找了他两次 (I looked for him twice). When the object is a regular noun, you have flexibility — the measure complement can go before or after the object: 我去过两次上海 or 我去过上海两次 (I have been to Shanghai twice). However, when the object is long or has modifiers, the measure complement usually goes before it: 他读了三遍课文 (He read the text three times through). Understanding these word order rules is essential for producing natural-sounding Chinese sentences with counts of actions.
Key Points
- Pronoun objects ALWAYS come before the measure complement: 我找了他两次 (not 我找了两次他).
- Regular noun objects can go before or after: 我去过两次上海 / 我去过上海两次.
- Common action measure words: 次 (times), 遍 (through/from start to finish), 趟 (trips), 下 (quick action).
- 遍 emphasizes completeness — reading the whole text from start to finish.
- 次 is the most general — simply counts occurrences.
- 趟 is specifically for trips or journeys.
- With 过 (experiential): 我来过中国一次 = I have been to China once.
Chinese speakers are often very specific about how many times they have done something. Saying 我去过三次中国 (I have been to China three times) is a common conversation starter. The precision with action measure words reflects the Chinese appreciation for specificity and detail in communication.

Common Mistakes
Pronoun objects (他, 她, 我) must come BEFORE the action measure complement. Never put a pronoun after the measure complement.
Use one measure word only — either 次 or 遍, not both. 遍 emphasizes watching the whole film from start to finish.
The action measure complement follows the verb: 去了一趟 (made one trip). Do not put it before the verb.
Practice Exercises
Tips & Tricks
Golden rule: pronoun objects (他, 她, 你, 我) ALWAYS go before the measure complement. No exceptions.
Use 次 for general counting, 遍 when emphasizing completeness (read the whole thing), and 趟 for trips.
When in doubt about word order with regular nouns, putting the measure complement after the object usually works: 去过中国两次.
The phrase 再...一遍 (once more from the start) is extremely useful in class: 请再说一遍, 请再写一遍.
Homework
Write eight sentences using action measure complements: two with 次, two with 遍, two with 趟, and two with 下. Include at least two sentences with pronoun objects and two with noun objects. Pay careful attention to word order.
