Main Action + Subject + + Secondary Action

顺便 means "conveniently / while you're at it / in passing." It indicates that a secondary action is done along the way or as an easy addition to a primary action. The secondary action requires little extra effort because the conditions are already favorable.

顺便 can appear before the verb or at the beginning of a clause. It implies convenience and efficiency — the secondary action is not the main purpose but is done because the opportunity presents itself. It is common in both spoken and written Chinese and is very practical for everyday communication.

Understanding 方式副词:顺便

The adverb 顺便 is one of the most practical and frequently used words in daily Chinese. It expresses the idea of doing something extra while you are already doing something else — taking advantage of the situation to accomplish a secondary task with minimal additional effort. Whether it is dropping off a friend's homework on the way to the teacher's office, visiting an old colleague while on a business trip, or picking up groceries on the way home from work, 顺便 captures the spirit of efficiency and convenience. Unlike many of the other adverbs in this HSK level, 顺便 is perfectly natural in casual spoken Chinese as well as in writing. It is also commonly used in requests: 你去超市的时候,能不能顺便帮我买瓶水?(When you go to the supermarket, could you conveniently pick up a bottle of water for me?). Mastering 顺便 will make your Chinese sound natural and practically-minded.

Key Points

  • 顺便 means "conveniently / while at it / in passing" — doing something extra with minimal effort.
  • The main action creates the opportunity; the secondary action takes advantage of it.
  • Very common in both spoken and written Chinese — a practical, everyday word.
  • Often used in polite requests: 你能不能顺便帮我...?
  • Can appear before the verb or at the start of a clause.
  • Implies efficiency — the secondary action would require separate effort otherwise.

Chinese culture values efficiency and the concept of "killing two birds with one stone" (一举两得). Using 顺便 in requests is considered polite because it acknowledges that you are not asking someone to make a special trip — you are just asking them to add a small task to something they are already doing. This makes the request feel lighter and more reasonable.

Tips & Tricks

1

Structure your sentence: Main Action + 顺便 + Secondary Action. The main action creates the opportunity.

2

顺便 is perfect for polite requests: "Since you're already going to X, could you 顺便 do Y for me?"

3

Learn the phrase 顺便提一下 (by the way) — it is extremely useful in conversation and writing.

4

Remember: 顺便 implies convenience and low effort. If the secondary action requires significant effort, 顺便 is not appropriate.

Homework

Write five scenarios where you use 顺便: (1) asking a roommate for a favor, (2) describing what you did on a trip, (3) mentioning something by the way in a meeting, (4) describing an impromptu stop on the way home, (5) a polite request to a colleague.
