Scope Adverbs: 都 & 一起
范围/协同副词
Say "all" and "together" naturally
都 (all/both) goes BEFORE the verb and AFTER the group it refers to. 一起/一块儿 (together) also goes before the verb.
Critical word order: the group or list must come BEFORE 都. "We all like it" = 我们都喜欢, never 都我们喜欢.

Understanding 范围/协同副词
都 is one of the most frequently used words in Chinese, and getting its placement right is crucial. It's a spotlight that says "every single one of them" — and it always shines BACKWARD onto the group that came before it. 我们都去 = "We ALL go." Meanwhile, 一起 brings people together for joint action: 我们一起去 = "We go TOGETHER." These two little words transform solo sentences into group activities. Here is a helpful mental image: think of 都 as a giant umbrella — everything listed BEFORE it is sheltered under the same statement. If you say 苹果、香蕉、橙子我都喜欢, the 都 covers all three fruits. The moment you move 都 in front of the list, the umbrella collapses and the sentence breaks. Keep the group first, then 都, and you will always be correct.
Key Points
- 都 (dōu) = all / both. It MUST come after the group and before the verb.
- The group 都 refers to must be already stated or understood before 都 appears.
- 一起 (yìqǐ) = together. 一块儿 (yíkuàir) is the colloquial northern variant — same meaning.
- Pattern for "together with someone": 跟 + person + 一起 + verb.
- 都 can also mean "even" in certain negative contexts: 我都不知道 = "I don't even know."
- 都 can combine with 不/没 for emphasis: 我什么都不知道 = "I don't know anything at all."
- 一起 can follow time words naturally: 明天一起吃饭吧 = "Let's eat together tomorrow." Very natural for making plans.
- When listing items before 都, you can use 和 or a comma: 茶和咖啡我都喜欢 or 茶、咖啡,我都喜欢.
Group harmony is a deep value in Chinese culture. 一起 (together) shows up constantly — eating together, studying together, going places together. Inviting someone to do things 一起 is a natural way to build friendships in China.

Common Mistakes
都 must come AFTER the group it refers to and BEFORE the verb. The group (我们) comes first.
都 and 一起 serve different purposes. 都 means "all go," 一起 means "go together." Pick the one that matches your meaning, or use them in separate sentences.
The correct order is 跟 + person + 一起 + verb. 一起 comes after the person you're doing the action with.

Tips & Tricks
Remember: 都 looks BACKWARD. Whatever group or list you want to include must appear BEFORE 都 in the sentence.
