Actions in Progress
进行态
Talk about actions happening right now
Use 在, 正在, 呢, or any combination of these to indicate an action is in progress — the Chinese equivalent of English "-ing."
All three markers (在, 正在, 呢) can be used alone or combined. 正在 V 呢 is the most emphatic ("right at this very moment!"), while 呢 alone is the most casual.

Understanding 进行态
Need to say "I'm eating" or "It's raining"? Chinese gives you a flexible toolkit with three interchangeable markers. Think of them as volume knobs for "in progress." 呢 alone is casual — like texting a friend 吃饭呢 (eating). 在 is standard — 我在看书 (I'm reading). 正在 is emphatic — 我正在开会 (I'm right in the middle of a meeting, don't bother me!). And 正在 + V + 呢 is maximum emphasis — the action is happening RIGHT THIS SECOND. This is actually easier than English in one way: Chinese doesn't change the verb form at all. English needs "eat → eating," but Chinese just adds a marker before or after the unchanged verb. No conjugation headaches!
Key Points
- 在 + V: standard progressive — 我在吃饭 (I'm eating)
- 正在 + V: emphatic, "right at this moment" — 老师正在上课 (The teacher is in the middle of class)
- V + 呢: casual, conversational — 她睡觉呢 (She's sleeping)
- 正在 + V + 呢: maximum emphasis — 外面正在下雨呢 (It's raining out there right now!)
- Negative: 没(有)在 + V — 他没在睡觉 (He's not sleeping)
- Progressive markers cannot combine with completion 了 — an action can't be both ongoing and finished
- 呢 at the end can soften or add a "what about you?" flavor: 你呢?(And you?)
- The progressive is often used to set scenes: 我在吃饭的时候,他来了 (While I was eating, he came)
When a Chinese person answers the phone and says 我在忙呢 (I'm busy right now), the 呢 adds a soft, slightly apologetic tone. Without 呢, 我在忙 sounds more blunt. The choice of marker often reflects mood and politeness.

Common Mistakes
Progressive (在/正在) and completion (了) are incompatible. An action can't be "in progress" and "completed" at the same time. Pick one.
Negate progressive actions with 没(有)在, not 不在. 不在 means "not located at" — a completely different meaning!
在 and 正在 are alternatives, not stacking blocks. Use one or the other, not both.

Tips & Tricks
Matching intensity to context: use 呢 alone for casual texting (吃饭呢), 在 for normal conversation (我在看书), and 正在 when you want to emphasize "right now!" (正在开会!).
The most common daily question in Chinese might be 你在干嘛呢?(What are you doing?) — practice it until it's automatic.
Remember: 正在 + 了 is a clash. Progressive = ongoing. 了 = done. They are opposites and can't live together in the same sentence.
When texting friends, V + 呢 is king. 吃饭呢 (eating), 看剧呢 (watching a show), 上课呢 (in class). Short, casual, and very native-sounding.
Use the progressive to set up "when" scenarios: 我在看电视的时候,他打电话来了 (While I was watching TV, he called). This is a super useful storytelling pattern.
Homework
Right now, look around you. Describe what five different people (or animals, or things) are doing using all three progressive markers. Use 在 for two, 呢 for two, and 正在…呢 for one. Then write the negative for each.
