Demonstrative Pronouns: 彼此 & 如此

Use 彼此 to express reciprocity and 如此 to express "so / such / like this" in formal contexts

Pattern彼此 + 动词 | 如此 + 形容词/动词彼此 functions as a pronoun meaning "each other / one another," often used as an adverb or object. 如此 means "so / such / like this" and modifies adjectives or verbs, adding a formal or literary tone.

朋友之间应该彼此信任。

Péngyou zhījiān yīnggāi bǐcǐ xìnrèn.

Friends should trust each other.

我们是多年的好朋友,不分彼此。

Wǒmen shì duō nián de hǎo péngyou, bù fēn bǐcǐ.

We have been good friends for years — we make no distinction between yours and mine.

Manner Adverb: 偷偷

方式副词:偷偷 · fāngshì fùcí: tōutōu

Use 偷偷 to describe actions done secretly, stealthily, or without others knowing

Pattern主语 + 偷偷(地) + 动词偷偷 is placed before the verb to indicate the action is performed secretly or stealthily. The optional 地 (de) can be added for a more literary or descriptive feel.

我偷偷送给他一件礼物。

Wǒ tōutōu sòng gěi tā yí jiàn lǐwù.

I secretly gave him a gift.

她偷偷地从窗户向外看。

Tā tōutōu de cóng chuānghu xiàng wài kàn.

She secretly peeked outside through the window.

小孩儿偷偷吃了一块巧克力。

Xiǎoháir tōutōu chī le yí kuài qiǎokèlì.

The child secretly ate a piece of chocolate.

Express nuanced attitudes and emotions using ten mood adverbs that convey surprise, resignation, determination, and relief

Pattern主语 + 语气副词 + 动词/形容词Mood adverbs are placed before the predicate to color the sentence with the speaker's attitude. Each carries a distinct emotional tone: 毕竟 (after all), 不免 (inevitably), 差点儿 (almost), 倒是 (actually/on the contrary), 干脆 (simply/just), 就 (insistence), 居然 (unexpectedly), 可 (emphasis), 明明 (clearly/obviously), 总算 (finally/at last).

不要怪他,他毕竟还小。

Bú yào guài tā, tā bìjìng hái xiǎo.

Don't blame him — after all, he is still young.

第一次参加考试,不免有些紧张。

Dì yī cì cānjiā kǎoshì, bùmiǎn yǒuxiē jǐnzhāng.

Taking an exam for the first time, it is inevitable to feel a bit nervous.

我今天上学差点儿迟到。

Wǒ jīntiān shàngxué chàdiǎnr chídào.

I almost was late for school today.

Preposition: 随着 (Along With / As)

介词引出时间处所:随着 · jiècí yǐnchū shíjiān chùsuǒ: suízhe

Use 随着 to express that one change accompanies or is caused by another change

Pattern随着 + A 的变化,B 也/越来越 + 变化随着 introduces a changing condition (A) that leads to or accompanies another change (B). It is often paired with 越来越 (more and more) or other expressions of gradual change in the main clause.

随着时间的推移,我慢慢理解了他的做法。

Suízhe shíjiān de tuīyí, wǒ mànmàn lǐjiě le tā de zuòfǎ.

As time went by, I gradually understood his approach.

随着冬天的到来,天气越来越冷。

Suízhe dōngtiān de dàolái, tiānqì yuèláiyuè lěng.

As winter arrives, the weather gets colder and colder.

随着科技的发展,人们的生活变得更方便了。

Suízhe kējì de fāzhǎn, rénmen de shēnghuó biàn de gèng fāngbiàn le.

As technology develops, people's lives become more convenient.

Preposition: 将 (Formal 把)

介词引出施事受事:将 · jiècí yǐnchū shīshì shòushì: jiāng

Use 将 as a formal written equivalent of 把 to indicate disposal or handling of an object

Pattern主语 + 将 + 宾语 + 动词(+ 补语/结果)将 functions identically to 把 in grammar — it introduces the object before the verb to show that the subject acts upon or disposes of the object. The difference is purely stylistic: 将 is formal, literary, and used in written Chinese.

父母将他送到中国留学。

Fùmǔ jiāng tā sòngdào Zhōngguó liúxué.

His parents sent him to China to study.

禁止将书带出阅览室。

Jìnzhǐ jiāng shū dài chū yuèlǎnshì.

It is forbidden to take books out of the reading room.

公司将这个项目交给了他。

Gōngsī jiāng zhège xiàngmù jiāo gěi le tā.

The company entrusted this project to him.
