Understanding 指示代词:彼此、如此

At HSK 5 you are ready to add elegance and precision to your Chinese. 彼此 (bǐcǐ) literally means "that one and this one" — it expresses mutual or reciprocal actions between people. While 互相 is more colloquial, 彼此 carries a warmer, more literary feel. You will hear it in phrases like 彼此信任 (trust each other) or the polite response 彼此彼此 (likewise!). 如此 (rúcǐ) means "so / such / like this" and elevates your register. Where a beginner would say 这么漂亮, an advanced speaker might write 如此美丽. It appears constantly in formal writing, speeches, and news broadcasts. Mastering these two pronouns will make your Chinese sound more sophisticated and natural in formal settings.

Key Points

  • 彼此 (bǐcǐ) = "each other / one another" — used for mutual actions between two or more parties.
  • 彼此彼此 is a polite set phrase meaning "likewise / the feeling is mutual."
  • 不分彼此 means "making no distinction between yours and mine" — very close relationship.
  • 如此 (rúcǐ) = "so / such / like this" — formal equivalent of 这么 or 那么.
  • 如此 often precedes adjectives: 如此美丽 (so beautiful), 如此复杂 (so complex).
  • 如此 can also modify verbs: 如此认真地工作 (to work so earnestly).

The phrase 彼此彼此 is a classic polite response in Chinese culture. When someone praises you — "Your Chinese is so good!" — you can reply 彼此彼此 to deflect the compliment and include the other person, reflecting the Chinese cultural value of modesty (谦虚).

Common Mistakes

我和他彼此很好。
我和他关系很好。/ 我们彼此很了解。

彼此 needs to modify a verb expressing a mutual action (trust, understand, respect). It cannot simply replace "each other" in all English sentences.

今天如此热。
今天这么热。/ 没想到今天会如此炎热。

如此 is formal and literary. In casual daily speech about the weather, use 这么 or 那么 instead. 如此 works better in written or emphatic contexts.

我们要如此帮助。
我们要彼此帮助。

For "help each other," use 彼此 (reciprocal). 如此 means "in this way / so much" — it does not express reciprocity.
