Degree Adverbs: 格外, 极, 极其

程度副词:格外、极、极其 · chéngdù fùcí: géwài, jí, jíqí

Express extreme degrees using 格外 (especially), 极 (extremely), and 极其 (exceedingly)

Pattern格外/极其 + 形容词 | 形容词 + 极了格外 and 极其 are placed before adjectives as intensifiers. 极 is most commonly used in the pattern "adjective + 极了" after the adjective. All three express that something has reached an extreme degree.

老师今天格外开心。

Lǎoshī jīntiān géwài kāixīn.

The teacher is especially happy today.

这些字极小,我都看不清楚。

Zhèxiē zì jí xiǎo, wǒ dōu kàn bu qīngchǔ.

These characters are extremely small — I can't read them clearly.

校长是一个极其负责的人。

Xiàozhǎng shì yí gè jíqí fùzé de rén.

The principal is an exceedingly responsible person.

Scope Adverb: 共 (Altogether / In Total)

范围、协同副词:共 · fànwéi, xiétóng fùcí: gòng

Use 共 to express totals, sums, and collective scope in statements

Pattern共 (+ 有) + 数量 + 名词 | 主语 + 共 + 动词Place 共 before the number or verb to indicate a total sum or collective action. 共 can be used with or without 有. It summarizes a count or expresses that something is done collectively.

共有三十人出席会议。

Gòng yǒu sānshí rén chūxí huìyì.

A total of thirty people attended the meeting.

这本书共十五课。

Zhè běn shū gòng shíwǔ kè.

This book has fifteen lessons in total.

我们班共有二十五个学生。

Wǒmen bān gòng yǒu èrshíwǔ gè xuéshēng.

Our class has twenty-five students in total.

Time Adverbs: 按时, 即将, 急忙, 渐渐, 尽快

时间副词:按时、即将、急忙、渐渐、尽快 · shíjiān fùcí: ànshí, jíjiāng, jímáng, jiànjiàn, jǐnkuài

Express punctuality, imminence, haste, gradual change, and urgency using five time adverbs

Pattern主语 + 按时/即将/急忙/渐渐/尽快 + 动词 (+ 其他成分)Each adverb is placed before the verb to modify when or how the action occurs. 按时 = on time; 即将 = about to (formal); 急忙 = hurriedly; 渐渐 = gradually; 尽快 = as soon as possible.

你要按时吃药。

Nǐ yào ànshí chī yào.

You must take your medicine on time.

同学们即将毕业。

Tóngxuémen jíjiāng bìyè.

The students are about to graduate.

快上课了,他急忙跑进教室。

Kuài shàngkè le, tā jímáng pǎo jìn jiàoshì.

Class was about to start, so he hurried into the classroom.

Frequency Adverbs: 一再, 再三

频率、重复副词:一再、再三 · pínlǜ, chóngfù fùcí: yīzài, zàisān

Express repeated actions using 一再 (repeatedly, over and over) and 再三 (over and over, with emphasis on insistence)

Pattern主语 + 一再/再三 + 动词Place 一再 or 再三 before the verb to indicate that an action has been done repeatedly. Both express repetition, but with subtle differences: 一再 emphasizes continuous repetition (often of the same behavior); 再三 emphasizes insistent, deliberate repetition (often of communication acts like asking, explaining, or warning).

他一再表示自己不会出席这次会议。

Tā yīzài biǎoshì zìjǐ bù huì chūxí zhè cì huìyì.

He repeatedly stated that he would not attend this meeting.

我再三解释,他还是不相信。

Wǒ zàisān jiěshì, tā háishi bù xiāngxìn.

I explained over and over, but he still did not believe me.

老师一再强调这个语法点。

Lǎoshī yīzài qiángdiào zhège yǔfǎ diǎn.

The teacher repeatedly emphasized this grammar point.

Correlative Adverb: 却 (But / Yet)

关联副词:却 · guānlián fùcí: què

Express unexpected contrast or contradiction using the adverb 却

Pattern(Clause A,) 主语 + 却 + 动词/形容词Place 却 before the verb or adjective in the second clause to signal that the content contrasts with or contradicts what was expected from the first clause. 却 always appears in the second clause, never the first.

我来了,他却没来。

Wǒ lái le, tā què méi lái.

I came, but he did not.

同学们都出去活动了,他却坐在教室里面不动。

Tóngxuémen dōu chūqù huódòng le, tā què zuò zài jiàoshì lǐmiàn bù dòng.

All the classmates went out for activities, but he just sat in the classroom without moving.

虽然他很聪明,学习却不认真。

Suīrán tā hěn cōngming, xuéxí què bù rènzhēn.

Although he is smart, he does not study seriously.
