Frequency Adverbs: 一再, 再三

频率、重复副词:一再、再三 · pínlǜ, chóngfù fùcí: yīzài, zàisān

Express repeated actions using 一再 (repeatedly, over and over) and 再三 (over and over, with emphasis on insistence)

Pattern主语 + 一再/再三 + 动词Place 一再 or 再三 before the verb to indicate that an action has been done repeatedly. Both express repetition, but with subtle differences: 一再 emphasizes continuous repetition (often of the same behavior); 再三 emphasizes insistent, deliberate repetition (often of communication acts like asking, explaining, or warning).

他一再表示自己不会出席这次会议。

Tā yīzài biǎoshì zìjǐ bù huì chūxí zhè cì huìyì.

He repeatedly stated that he would not attend this meeting.

我再三解释,他还是不相信。

Wǒ zàisān jiěshì, tā háishi bù xiāngxìn.

I explained over and over, but he still did not believe me.

老师一再强调这个语法点。

Lǎoshī yīzài qiángdiào zhège yǔfǎ diǎn.

Preposition: 替 (on behalf of/for)

替 · tì

Use 替 to express doing something on behalf of someone or feeling emotions for someone

Pattern主语 + 替 + 人 + 动词Place 替 before the person you are acting for or feeling for. 替 can mean "on behalf of" (doing something for someone) or "for" (feeling an emotion directed at someone).

你别替我担心了,我自己处理。

Nǐ bié tì wǒ dānxīn le, wǒ zìjǐ chǔlǐ.

Don't worry about me — I'll handle it myself.

取得这么好的成绩,大家都替你感到高兴。

Qǔdé zhème hǎo de chéngjì, dàjiā dōu tì nǐ gǎndào gāoxìng.

Having achieved such great results, everyone feels happy for you.

他生病了,我替他上课。

Tā shēngbìng le, wǒ tì tā shàngkè.

He is sick, so I am attending class on his behalf.

Preposition: 根据 (based on/according to)

根据 · gēnjù

Use 根据 to cite evidence, sources, or criteria for actions and decisions

Pattern根据 + 依据/来源,主句Place 根据 before the evidence, source, or basis to indicate that the action or conclusion in the main clause is founded on it. 根据 can also function as a noun meaning "basis" or "evidence."

学校根据学生的中文水平分班。

Xuéxiào gēnjù xuéshēng de Zhōngwén shuǐpíng fēn bān.

The school assigns classes based on students' Chinese proficiency.

根据大家的意见,我们修改了计划。

Gēnjù dàjiā de yìjiàn, wǒmen xiūgǎi le jìhuà.

Based on everyone's opinions, we revised the plan.

根据天气预报,明天会下雪。

Gēnjù tiānqì yùbào, míngtiān huì xiàxuě.

According to the weather forecast, it will snow tomorrow.

Preposition: 作为 (as/in the capacity of)

作为 · zuòwéi

Use 作为 to frame a role, identity, or capacity that justifies an action or expectation

Pattern作为 + 身份/角色,主语 + 应该/要/会 + 动词Place 作为 before a role, identity, or capacity to frame the context for the main clause. The main clause typically states an expectation, obligation, or natural consequence of that role.

他作为教师代表参加了这次会议。

Tā zuòwéi jiàoshī dàibiǎo cānjiā le zhè cì huìyì.

He participated in this meeting as a teacher representative.

作为学生,你应该按时完成作业。

Zuòwéi xuéshēng, nǐ yīnggāi ànshí wánchéng zuòyè.

As a student, you should complete your homework on time.

作为朋友,我必须告诉你真相。

Zuòwéi péngyou, wǒ bìxū gàosù nǐ zhēnxiàng.

As a friend, I must tell you the truth.

Conjunctions: 并 & 以及

Use 并 and 以及 to link words, phrases, and actions in formal Chinese

PatternA + 并 + B (actions) / A、B + 以及 + C (items)并 connects two verb phrases to show parallel or sequential actions, often in formal contexts. 以及 connects the last item in a list, functioning like "as well as" or "and" in formal enumeration.

他们同意并支持我们的建议。

Tāmen tóngyì bìng zhīchí wǒmen de jiànyì.

They agreed with and supported our proposal.

小王、小李以及另外三名同学都通过了考试。

Xiǎo Wáng, Xiǎo Lǐ yǐjí lìngwài sān míng tóngxué dōu tōngguò le kǎoshì.

Xiao Wang, Xiao Li, as well as three other classmates, all passed the exam.

公司决定缩减开支并提高效率。

Gōngsī juédìng suōjiǎn kāizhī bìng tígāo xiàolǜ.

The company decided to reduce expenses and improve efficiency.

Use eight clause-level connectors to build complex, well-structured Chinese sentences

Pattern分句A + 连接词 + 分句BThese connectors link clauses or sentences to express addition (此外), contrast (而, 而是), reasoning (既然, 可见), emphasis (甚至), hypothesis (假如), and summary (总之). Each occupies a specific logical position in the sentence.

我们要认真听讲,此外还要积极完成作业。

Wǒmen yào rènzhēn tīngjiǎng, cǐwài hái yào jījí wánchéng zuòyè.

We need to listen carefully in class; in addition, we should actively complete our homework.

为什么北方下雪越来越少,而南方下雪越来越多?

Wèishénme běifāng xiàxuě yuè lái yuè shǎo, ér nánfāng xiàxuě yuè lái yuè duō?

Why is it snowing less and less in the north, while it snows more and more in the south?

他不是不想去,而是没有时间。

Tā bú shì bù xiǎng qù, érshì méiyǒu shíjiān.

It's not that he doesn't want to go, but rather that he doesn't have time.

Use 似的 to create vivid comparisons and similes in Chinese

PatternA + 像/跟/好像 + B + 似的似的 is placed at the end of a comparison phrase to mean "like" or "as if." It often pairs with 像, 跟, or 好像 before the comparison target, forming vivid similes.

她俩好像从来没见过似的。

Tā liǎ hǎoxiàng cónglái méi jiàn guò shìde.

The two of them acted as if they had never met before.

这里的景色像画儿似的。

Zhèlǐ de jǐngsè xiàng huàr shìde.

The scenery here is like a painting.

他的中文说得跟中国人似的。

Tā de Zhōngwén shuō de gēn Zhōngguó rén shìde.

He speaks Chinese just like a Chinese person.
