Result Complement 2: Verb + 到/住/走

结果补语2:动词+到/住/走 · jiéguǒ bǔyǔ 2: dòngcí + dào/zhù/zǒu

Express the result of an action using the complements 到, 住, and 走

Patternverb + 到/住/走Attach 到, 住, or 走 directly after a verb to indicate the result of the action. 到 means the action successfully reached its target. 住 means the action held or secured something. 走 means the action caused something to leave or be taken away.

他终于买到火车票了。

Tā zhōngyú mǎi dào huǒchē piào le.

He finally managed to buy a train ticket.

我把球传给他,可是他没接住。

Wǒ bǎ qiú chuán gěi tā, kěshì tā méi jiē zhù.

I passed the ball to him, but he did not catch it.

那本书他取走了吗?

Nà běn shū tā qǔ zǒu le ma?

Did he take that book away?

Compound Directional Complements

趋向补语2 · qūxiàng bǔyǔ 2

Use compound directional complements to express complex movement directions

Patternverb + 出/过/回/进/起/上/下 + 来/去Combine a main verb with a directional verb (出, 过, 回, 进, 起, 上, 下) and a perspective indicator (来 toward speaker, 去 away from speaker). This creates compound directional complements that describe complex movements.

他从书包里拿了一本书出来。

Tā cóng shūbāo lǐ ná le yī běn shū chūlái.

He took a book out of his backpack.

他慢慢地走出教室去了。

Tā mànmàn de zǒu chū jiàoshì qù le.

He slowly walked out of the classroom.

汽车开过来了,咱们准备上车。

Qìchē kāi guòlái le, zánmen zhǔnbèi shàng chē.

The car is coming over; let us get ready to board.

Potential Complement: V+得/不+Result

可能补语1:动词+得/不+动词/形容词;动词+得/不+了 · kěnéng bǔyǔ 1: dòngcí + de/bù + dòngcí/xíngróngcí; dòngcí + de/bù + liǎo

Express whether an action can or cannot achieve a certain result using potential complements

Patternverb + 得/不 + result complement (verb/adjective/了)Insert 得 (positive) or 不 (negative) between a verb and its result complement to express whether the result can or cannot be achieved. 得 indicates possibility ("can achieve the result"), and 不 indicates impossibility ("cannot achieve the result"). The special complement 了 (liǎo) means "able to manage/handle."

老师的话我都听得懂。

Lǎoshī de huà wǒ dōu tīng de dǒng.

I can understand everything the teacher says.

这件衣服太脏了,洗不干净了。

Zhè jiàn yīfu tài zāng le, xǐ bù gānjìng le.

This piece of clothing is too dirty; it cannot be washed clean.

明天的比赛你参加得了吗?

Míngtiān de bǐsài nǐ cānjiā de liǎo ma?

Degree Complement: 得很, 极了, 死了

程度补语1:形容词/心理动词+得很/极了/死了 · chéngdù bǔyǔ 1: xíngróngcí/xīnlǐ dòngcí + de hěn/jí le/sǐ le

Express extreme degrees using the complements 得很, 极了, and 死了

Patternadjective/psychological verb + 得很 / 极了 / 死了Add 得很, 极了, or 死了 after an adjective or psychological verb to express an extreme degree. 得很 means "very/quite," 极了 means "extremely," and 死了 is colloquial for "to death / incredibly."

我累得很。

Wǒ lèi de hěn.

I am quite tired.

外面冷极了。

Wàimiàn lěng jí le.

It is extremely cold outside.

这个游戏孩子们喜欢极了。

Zhège yóuxì háizimen xǐhuan jí le.

The children like this game extremely much.
