Modal Adverbs: 大概, 恐怕

情态副词:大概、恐怕 · qíngtài fùcí: dàgài, kǒngpà

Express probability and concerned speculation using 大概 and 恐怕

Pattern主语 + 大概/恐怕 + VPPlace the modal adverb before the verb phrase to express the speaker's estimation or concern about a situation. 大概 signals a neutral guess ("probably"). 恐怕 signals a worried or reluctant estimation ("I'm afraid that").

他病了,今天大概不会来上课了。

Tā bìng le, jīntiān dàgài bú huì lái shàngkè le.

He is sick; he probably won't come to class today.

天这么阴,大概要下雨。

Tiān zhème yīn, dàgài yào xià yǔ.

The sky is so overcast; it will probably rain.

我头有点儿疼,恐怕是感冒了。

Wǒ tóu yǒudiǎnr téng, kǒngpà shì gǎnmào le.

My head hurts a little; I'm afraid I've caught a cold.

Tone/Mood Adverbs: Expressing Attitudes and Emphasis

语气副词:白、并、当然、到底、反正、根本、果然、简直、绝对、难道、其实、千万、确实、只好、终于 · yǔqì fùcí: bái, bìng, dāngrán, dàodǐ, fǎnzhèng, gēnběn, guǒrán, jiǎnzhí, juéduì, nándào, qíshí, qiānwàn, quèshí, zhǐhǎo, zhōngyú

Use mood adverbs to express frustration, emphasis, surprise, certainty, and other attitudes

Pattern主语 + 语气副词 + VPPlace the mood adverb before the verb phrase to color the sentence with the speaker's attitude, emotion, or emphasis. Each adverb adds a distinct emotional flavor: frustration (白, 根本), emphasis (并, 确实, 绝对), reasoning (反正, 其实), surprise (果然, 简直), questioning (到底, 难道), urgency (千万), resignation (只好), or relief (终于).

老师不在办公室,我白去了。

Lǎoshī bú zài bàngōngshì, wǒ bái qù le.

The teacher was not in the office — I went for nothing.

这次考试并没有他们说的那么简单。

Zhè cì kǎoshì bìng méiyǒu tāmen shuō de nàme jiǎndān.

This exam was not actually as easy as they said.

学生当然应该做作业。

Xuésheng dāngrán yīnggāi zuò zuòyè.

Students should of course do their homework.

Preposition 由: Introducing Origin/Source

介词引出时间、处所:由¹ · jiècí yǐnchū shíjiān, chùsuǒ: yóu

Use the preposition 由 to indicate a starting point, origin, or agent in formal contexts

Pattern由 + 起点/来源 + VPPlace 由 before a noun representing a starting point, origin, or agent. The structure introduces where something begins, comes from, or who is responsible for an action. 由 is more formal than 从 and is commonly used in written Chinese and official contexts.

这路公交车由北京机场出发。

Zhè lù gōngjiāochē yóu Běijīng jīchǎng chūfā.

This bus route departs from Beijing Airport.

我们由南门进入公园。

Wǒmen yóu nán mén jìnrù gōngyuán.

We enter the park from the south gate.

这趟列车由上海开往广州。

Zhè tàng lièchē yóu Shànghǎi kāi wǎng Guǎngzhōu.

This train runs from Shanghai to Guangzhou.
