Suffixes: ~儿, ~家, ~们, ~头, ~子

后缀:~儿、~家、~们、~头、~子 · hòuzhuì: ~ér, ~jiā, ~men, ~tóu, ~zi

Understand and use five common Chinese noun suffixes to form new words and express plural or categorical meaning

Patternnoun/adjective + 儿/家/们/头/子Each suffix attaches to a root word to form a noun. ~儿 adds a colloquial or diminutive flavor, ~家 marks experts or professionals, ~们 makes pronouns and some nouns plural, ~头 forms nouns from other word types, and ~子 is a general noun-forming suffix.

墙上挂了一幅画儿。

Qiáng shang guà le yī fú huàr.

A painting is hanging on the wall.

你有空儿吗?我想找你聊聊。

Nǐ yǒu kòngr ma? Wǒ xiǎng zhǎo nǐ liáoliao.

Do you have free time? I want to chat with you.

她长大以后想当作家。

Tā zhǎngdà yǐhòu xiǎng dāng zuòjiā.

She wants to become a writer when she grows up.

Modal Verb: 敢 (dare)

能愿动词:敢 · néngyuàn dòngcí: gǎn

Use the modal verb 敢 to express courage, daring, or the nerve to do something

Pattern主语 + 敢 / 不敢 + 动词Place 敢 before the main verb to express that someone dares or has the courage to do something. The negative 不敢 means "dare not" or "do not have the nerve to." In questions, 敢 often challenges or provokes.

这儿有两米高,你敢跳下去吗?

Zhèr yǒu liǎng mǐ gāo, nǐ gǎn tiào xiàqù ma?

It is two meters high here — do you dare to jump down?

我不敢在河里游泳。

Wǒ bù gǎn zài hé lǐ yóuyǒng.

I don't dare to swim in the river.

他很勇敢,什么都敢做。

Tā hěn yǒnggǎn, shénme dōu gǎn zuò.

He is very brave — he dares to do anything.

Modal Verb: 需要 (need)

能愿动词:需要 · néngyuàn dòngcí: xūyào

Use 需要 to express necessity, needs, and requirements in various contexts

Pattern主语 + 需要 + 动词/名词Place 需要 before a verb to express the need to do something, or before a noun to express the need for something. The negative 不需要 means "do not need to" or "there is no need."

她生病了,需要休息。

Tā shēngbìng le, xūyào xiūxi.

She is sick and needs to rest.

我们不需要买吃的,家里有很多。

Wǒmen bù xūyào mǎi chī de, jiā lǐ yǒu hěn duō.

We don't need to buy food — there is a lot at home.

这个工作需要很多经验。

Zhège gōngzuò xūyào hěn duō jīngyàn.

This job requires a lot of experience.
