Time Adverbs: 刚, 还, 忽然, 一直, 已经

时间副词:刚、刚刚、还、忽然、一直、已经 · shíjiān fùcí: gāng, gānggāng, hái, hūrán, yìzhí, yǐjīng

Describe when and how actions occur in time using key time adverbs

Pattern主语 + 时间副词 + 动词Place the time adverb before the verb to indicate the temporal relationship of the action. Each adverb situates the action differently on the timeline.

我刚到家。

Wǒ gāng dào jiā.

I just got home.

他还在睡觉。

Tā hái zài shuìjiào.

He is still sleeping.

我们走着走着,忽然下起雨来了。

Wǒmen zǒu zhe zǒu zhe, hūrán xià qǐ yǔ lái le.

We were walking along when it suddenly started raining.

Frequency Adverbs: 重新, 经常, 老, 总是, 又

Express how often actions happen and describe repeated actions

Pattern主语 + 频率副词 + 动词Place the frequency or repetition adverb before the verb. These adverbs tell the listener how often something happens or whether it is happening again.

我经常去公园跑步。

Wǒ jīngcháng qù gōngyuán pǎobù.

I often go jogging in the park.

他总是迟到。

Tā zǒngshì chídào.

He is always late.

你怎么老忘记带钥匙?

Nǐ zěnme lǎo wàngjì dài yàoshi?

Why do you always forget to bring your keys?

Connective Adverb: 就 (jiù)

关联副词:就 · guānlián fùcí: jiù

Master the multiple meanings of 就 as a connective adverb: sequence, emphasis, and immediacy

Pattern……就 + 动词就 is placed before the verb and connects to a preceding condition, time, or context. Its meaning shifts depending on what comes before it.

他吃完饭就走了。

Tā chī wán fàn jiù zǒu le.

He left right after eating.

他六岁就会游泳了。

Tā liù suì jiù huì yóuyǒng le.

He could already swim at age six.

我就不告诉你。

Wǒ jiù bù gàosu nǐ.

I simply will not tell you.

Manner Adverb: 故意 (On Purpose)

方式副词:故意 · fāngshì fùcí: gùyì

Express intentional actions using 故意 and distinguish deliberate from accidental actions

Pattern主语 + 故意 + 动词Place 故意 before the verb to indicate the action was done deliberately, on purpose. The negative 不是故意 means "did not mean to" — an apology or defense.

他故意提高声音。

Tā gùyì tígāo shēngyīn.

He deliberately raised his voice.

我不是故意弄坏电脑的。

Wǒ bú shì gùyì nòng huài diànnǎo de.

I did not break the computer on purpose.

你是故意的吧?

Nǐ shì gùyì de ba?

You did that on purpose, did you not?

Modal Adverbs: 必须, 差不多, 好像, 一定, 也许

Express necessity, approximation, appearance, certainty, and possibility using modal adverbs

Pattern主语 + 情态副词 + 动词 / 形容词Place the modal adverb before the verb or adjective to express the speaker's attitude toward the likelihood, necessity, or appearance of the action or state.

你必须八点之前到。

Nǐ bìxū bā diǎn zhīqián dào.

You must arrive before eight.

明天一定会更好。

Míngtiān yídìng huì gèng hǎo.

Tomorrow will definitely be better.

饭差不多好了。

Fàn chàbuduō hǎo le.

The food is almost ready.

Express the speaker's attitude about timing and appropriateness using mood adverbs

Pattern主语 + 才/都/就/正好 + 动词Place the mood adverb before the verb to convey your emotional attitude about the timing or appropriateness of the action. These adverbs change the "feel" of a sentence without changing the facts.

他十点才到。

Tā shí diǎn cái dào.

He did not arrive until ten.

都十二点了,快睡觉!

Dōu shí'èr diǎn le, kuài shuìjiào!

It is already midnight — go to sleep!

她七点就到了。

Tā qī diǎn jiù dào le.

She arrived as early as seven.

Preposition: 当 (When / At the Time of)

介词:当 · jiècí: dāng

Use 当 to set the time frame of an action, meaning "when" or "at the time of"

Pattern当 + subject + verb + 的时候,main clausePlace 当 at the beginning of a time clause, followed by the subject and verb, then 的时候 to close the time clause. The main clause follows.

当他进来的时候,我们正在看电视。

Dāng tā jìnlái de shíhou, wǒmen zhèngzài kàn diànshì.

When he came in, we were watching TV.

当爸爸回来的时候,妈妈已经做好晚饭了。

Dāng bàba huílái de shíhou, māma yǐjīng zuò hǎo wǎnfàn le.

When Dad came back, Mom had already finished making dinner.

当老师走进教室的时候,大家都安静了。

Dāng lǎoshī zǒu jìn jiàoshì de shíhou, dàjiā dōu ānjìng le.

When the teacher walked into the classroom, everyone became quiet.

Use 往 to indicate movement towards a direction or location

Pattern主语 + 往 + direction/place + verbPlace 往 before a direction word (左, 右, 前, 后, etc.) or a place, followed by the verb of movement. 往 specifies which direction the movement goes.

你往左走就能看见洗手间。

Nǐ wǎng zuǒ zǒu jiù néng kànjiàn xǐshǒujiān.

Turn left and you will see the restroom.

你往前走一百米就到了。

Nǐ wǎng qián zǒu yìbǎi mǐ jiù dào le.

Walk forward 100 meters and you will be there.

往右拐就是银行。

Wǎng yòu guǎi jiù shì yínháng.

Turn right and there is the bank.

Use 向 to indicate the direction of an action or the target of a gesture

Pattern主语 + 向 + direction/person + verbPlace 向 before a direction or a person/thing, followed by the verb. 向 points the action towards its target — either a physical direction or a figurative one.

你向西边看,看见西山了吗?

Nǐ xiàng xībiān kàn, kànjiàn xīshān le ma?

Look towards the west — can you see the Western Hills?

他向图书馆走去了。

Tā xiàng túshūguǎn zǒu qù le.

He walked towards the library.

我们应该向他学习。

Wǒmen yīnggāi xiàng tā xuéxí.

We should learn from him.

Use 从 to express the starting point of movement, time, or a range

Pattern从 + starting point + verb / 从 + A + 到 + BPlace 从 before the starting point (a place, time, or person), then add the verb. Often paired with 到 to mark both start and end points: 从……到……

你从这儿走五分钟就到书店了。

Nǐ cóng zhèr zǒu wǔ fēnzhōng jiù dào shūdiàn le.

Walk five minutes from here and you will reach the bookstore.

这路公交车从我们学校门口过。

Zhè lù gōngjiāochē cóng wǒmen xuéxiào ménkǒu guò.

This bus route passes by our school gate.

我从北京来。

Wǒ cóng Běijīng lái.

I come from Beijing.

Use 对 to express attitude towards a person or to indicate the target of speech or action

Pattern主语 + 对 + person/thing + adjective/verbPlace 对 before the person or thing that is the target of an attitude or action. Follow with an adjective (to describe attitude) or a verb (to describe the action directed at them).

她对顾客非常热情。

Tā duì gùkè fēicháng rèqíng.

She is very warm towards customers.

这件事你对他说了吗?

Zhè jiàn shì nǐ duì tā shuō le ma?

Did you tell him about this matter?

他对我很好。

Tā duì wǒ hěn hǎo.

He treats me very well.
