Measure Words: 层, 封, 件, 条, 位

名量词:层、封、件、条、位 · míng liàngcí: céng, fēng, jiàn, tiáo, wèi

Count floors, letters, clothing, long things, and people politely using new measure words

Pattern数字 + 量词 + 名词Every noun needs a measure word between the number and the noun. In HSK 1 you learned 个, 本, 杯 etc. Now you add more specific ones for floors, letters, clothing, long objects, and polite person reference.

Action Measure Words: 遍, 次, 场, 回, 下

动量词:遍、次、场、回、下 · dòngliàngcí: biàn, cì, chǎng, huí, xià

Count actions and events using the correct action measure word for each context

Pattern动词 + 数量 + 动量词 (+ 宾语)Place the number and action measure word after the verb to count how many times an action occurs. Each measure word carries a specific nuance about the nature of the action.

这本书我看了两遍。

Zhè běn shū wǒ kàn le liǎng biàn.

I read this book twice (all the way through).

我去过北京一次。

Wǒ qù guo Běijīng yí cì.

I have been to Beijing once.

昨天下了一场大雨。

Zuótiān xià le yì chǎng dà yǔ.

There was a heavy rain yesterday.

Time Duration Words: 分钟, 年, 天, 周

时量词:分钟、年、天、周 · shíliàngcí: fēnzhōng, nián, tiān, zhōu

Express how long an action lasts using time duration phrases after the verb

Pattern主语 + 动词 (+ 了) + 时间长度Place the time duration phrase after the verb (often with 了) to express how long the action lasted. If there is an object, the structure becomes more complex.

我等了十分钟。

Wǒ děng le shí fēnzhōng.

I waited for ten minutes.

他学了两年中文。

Tā xué le liǎng nián Zhōngwén.

He studied Chinese for two years.

我们休息了五天。

Wǒmen xiūxi le wǔ tiān.

We rested for five days.

Degree Adverbs: Expressing Intensity

程度副词:多、多么、好、更、十分、特别、挺、有(一)点儿 · chéngdù fùcí: duō, duōme, hǎo, gèng, shífēn, tèbié, tǐng, yǒu (yì) diǎnr

Express various degrees of intensity from slightly to extremely using degree adverbs

Pattern程度副词 + 形容词 / 动词Place the degree adverb before the adjective or verb to indicate intensity. Each adverb occupies a different position on the intensity scale.

这孩子多可爱啊!

Zhè háizi duō kě'ài a!

What an adorable child!

他弟弟更高。

Tā dìdi gèng gāo.

His younger brother is even taller.

这道菜十分好吃。

Zhè dào cài shífēn hǎochī.

This dish is extremely delicious.

Scope Adverbs: 全, 一共, 只

范围、协同副词:全、一共、只 · fànwéi, xiétóng fùcí: quán, yígòng, zhǐ

Express totality, sum, and limitation using scope adverbs

Pattern全/一共/只 + 动词 / 形容词Place the scope adverb before the verb or adjective. 全 (all/entirely) indicates totality, 一共 (altogether) introduces a total count, and 只 (only) limits or restricts.

同学们全来了。

Tóngxuémen quán lái le.

All the classmates came.

一共有二十个人。

Yígòng yǒu èrshí ge rén.

There are twenty people in total.

我只有二百块钱。

Wǒ zhǐ yǒu èr bǎi kuài qián.

I only have two hundred yuan.
