Every noun needs a measure word between the number and the noun. In HSK 1 you learned 个, 本, 杯 etc. Now you add more specific ones for floors, letters, clothing, long objects, and polite person reference.

Chinese measure words categorize the world by shape, type, and social context. Learning them is like learning a filing system for reality.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the 名量词:层、封、件、条、位 pattern

Understanding 名量词:层、封、件、条、位

In HSK 1, you met the concept of measure words and learned 个 (the universal default), 本 (books), 杯 (cups), and several others. Now your collection grows with five new and very practical ones. 层 counts floors and layers — perfect for buildings and cakes. 封 is specifically for letters and emails — think of it as "sealed" (the character 封 means to seal). 件 counts items of clothing and matters/affairs — very versatile. 条 is for long, thin things: rivers, roads, fish, pants, towels. 位 is a polite measure word for people — use it for guests, teachers, and anyone you want to show respect to. Each measure word tells you something about the noun it pairs with.

Key Points

  • 层 (céng) = floors, stories, layers. 两层楼 = two-story building.
  • 封 (fēng) = letters, emails. 一封信 = one letter.
  • 件 (jiàn) = items of clothing, matters. 一件衣服 = one piece of clothing. 一件事 = one matter.
  • 条 (tiáo) = long thin things: rivers, roads, fish, pants, scarves, news items. 一条河 = one river.
  • 位 (wèi) = people (polite/respectful). 一位老师 = one teacher (respectful).
  • 位 vs. 个: 一个人 is neutral; 一位客人 is polite. Use 位 for guests, elders, professionals.
  • 条 is one of the most versatile measure words — it covers anything long and narrow.

Using 位 instead of 个 for people is an important social skill in Chinese. At a restaurant, say 三位 (three guests), not 三个人 — it sounds much more refined. In business settings, 位 is expected.

一___信 (one letter)

Tips & Tricks

1

Think of 条 as anything you could stretch out into a line: rivers, roads, fish, pants, scarves, even news items.

2

件 covers two categories: clothing AND matters/affairs. 一件事 = one matter, 一件衣服 = one piece of clothing.

3

At restaurants, always use 位: 三位 sounds much more refined than 三个人.

4

封 literally means "to seal" — think of sealing an envelope. That is why it is used for letters.
