变化态:了 · biànhuà tài: le

Express 'it's changed now' with sentence-final 了

PatternSentence + 了 (at end)Place 了 at the END of the sentence to signal that a new situation has emerged — something has changed from how it was before.

她病了。

Tā bìng le.

She's gotten sick. / She's sick now.

雨小了。

Yǔ xiǎo le.

The rain has let up.

Time Measure Words (时量词)

时量词 · shí liàngcí

Use 日 / 号 / 岁 / 点 / 分 / 年 / 天 to count time itself

PatternNumber + 时量词时量词 (time measure words) attach DIRECTLY to a number — no extra measure word in between. 三天 (three days), 五年 (five years), 十岁 (ten years old), 八点 (eight o'clock).

我学了三年中文。

Wǒ xué le sān nián Zhōngwén.

I've studied Chinese for three years.

弟弟今年八岁。

Dìdi jīnnián bā suì.

My younger brother is eight this year.

现在三点半。

Xiànzài sān diǎn bàn.

It's 3:30 right now.

完成态:了 · wánchéng tài: le

Express completed actions with specific results

PatternV + 了 (+ Quantity/Object)Place 了 directly after the verb to indicate the action has been completed, often followed by a specific quantity or object to show the result.

他买了两个面包。

Tā mǎi le liǎng gè miànbāo.

He bought two loaves of bread.

我喝了很多水。

Wǒ hē le hěn duō shuǐ.

I drank a lot of water.

她看了一个小时的电视。

Tā kàn le yí gè xiǎoshí de diànshì.

She watched TV for an hour.

Verb-Quantity Complements (数量补语)

数量补语 · shùliàng bǔyǔ

Say HOW MANY TIMES an action happened using V + number + 次

PatternSubject + V (+ 了/过) + Number + 次A 数量补语 ("quantity complement") tells you HOW MANY TIMES an action was performed. It attaches AFTER the verb, never before. At HSK 1 the standard 动量词 is 次 (cì — "time / occurrence").

我去过北京两次。

Wǒ qù guo Běijīng liǎng cì.

I've been to Beijing twice.

我看了三次电影。

Wǒ kàn le sān cì diànyǐng.

I watched movies three times.

他每个星期来一次。

Tā měi ge xīngqī lái yí cì.

He comes once every week.

Talk about actions happening right now

Pattern在/正在 + V · V + 呢 · 正在 + V + 呢Use 在, 正在, 呢, or any combination of these to indicate an action is in progress — the Chinese equivalent of English "-ing."

外面正在下雨。

Wàimiàn zhèngzài xià yǔ.

It's raining outside right now.

同学们正在考试呢。

Tóngxuémen zhèngzài kǎoshì ne.

The classmates are taking an exam right now.

我洗衣服呢。

Wǒ xǐ yīfu ne.

I'm doing laundry.

Read and say prices naturally

PatternX 块 (Y 毛) (Z 分)Chinese currency uses three units: 块 (yuán, dollars), 毛 (jiǎo, dimes/tenths), and 分 (fēn, cents/hundredths). In casual speech, use 块 and 毛. In formal writing, use 元 and 角.

九块三毛。

Jiǔ kuài sān máo.

9.30 yuan.

十五块六毛三分。

Shíwǔ kuài liù máo sān fēn.

15.63 yuan.

Telling Time & Dates

Tell dates, days, and clock time

PatternYear年 + Month月 + Day日 · 星期X · X点Y分 / X点半Chinese time expressions always go from BIGGEST to SMALLEST: year, month, day, day of week, hour, minute. Clock time uses 点 (o'clock) and 分 (minutes).

2026年3月10日。

Èr líng èr liù nián sān yuè shí rì.

March 10, 2026.

今天星期二。

Jīntiān xīngqī èr.

Today is Tuesday.

现在五点半。

Xiànzài wǔ diǎn bàn.

It's 5:30 right now.
