Causal: ……以至于…… (To the Point That)
因果复句:……,以至于……
Express extreme degree or consequence using 以至于 to show something reached an extraordinary extent
以至于 means "to the point that / to such an extent that." It introduces a consequence that represents an extreme or remarkable degree of the preceding action or situation.
以至于 is different from 以致. While 以致 implies a negative, unintended result, 以至于 emphasizes DEGREE — the result is so extreme that it is noteworthy. It can be used for both negative and neutral situations.

Understanding 因果复句:……,以至于……
If 以致 is about bad consequences, 以至于 is about extreme ones. When something reaches such a degree that it produces a remarkable result, 以至于 is your connector. 这篇课文读了很多遍,以至于全文都背得出来 (I read this text so many times that I can recite the entire thing from memory). The result is not necessarily bad — it is just extreme. 以至于 emphasizes the sheer degree of something: so much studying that you can recite it, so fast a development that everyone was caught off guard, so deep an impression that you will never forget it. This pattern adds drama and emphasis to your writing and speaking.
Key Points
- 以至于 (yǐzhìyú) = "to the point that / to such an extent that" — emphasizes DEGREE.
- Unlike 以致, 以至于 does not exclusively imply negative results.
- The clause before 以至于 describes the action or cause; the clause after describes the extreme consequence.
- 以至于 often pairs with degree words: 太, 这么, 那么, 如此.
- Common in narrative and descriptive writing to create vivid, emphatic statements.
- Distinguishing 以致 (negative result) from 以至于 (extreme degree) is a key advanced skill.
Chinese rhetoric values vivid exaggeration for emphasis. Using 以至于 to highlight how extreme something became is a sophisticated rhetorical technique found in everything from essays to political speeches.
