Modal Particle: 而已 (That's All / Merely)
语气助词:而已
Use 而已 at the end of a sentence to downplay or minimize something
而已 is placed at the very end of a sentence to indicate that the matter is trivial, simple, or not as significant as one might think. It minimizes or downplays what was just stated.
而已 often co-occurs with 只是, 不过, 仅仅 in the main clause to reinforce the sense of minimization. It is more literary than 罢了 (which has the same meaning) and can carry various undertones: modesty, dismissiveness, reassurance, or sarcasm.

Understanding 语气助词:而已
而已 is a modal particle meaning "that's all," "merely," "nothing more." It sits at the end of a sentence and signals that the speaker considers the matter smaller, simpler, or less important than someone might think. When you say 只是一堆纸而已, you are dismissing something — "It is just a pile of paper, nothing special." The emotional range of 而已 is surprisingly wide. It can express genuine modesty (我不过是随便说说而已 — I was just making a casual remark), reassurance (小事而已,别担心 — It is just a small thing, don't worry), dismissiveness (这算什么,只是运气好而已 — So what, it was just luck), or even disguised bitterness (我只是个外人而已 — I am merely an outsider, that is all). 而已 frequently partners with 只是, 不过, 仅仅, or 无非 earlier in the sentence, creating a "merely X, that is all" structure. Compared to the colloquial 罢了 (which has identical meaning), 而已 is slightly more refined and versatile.
Key Points
- 而已 (éryǐ) = "that's all / merely / nothing more" — sentence-final particle.
- Minimizes or downplays the significance of the statement.
- Common partners: 只是……而已, 不过……而已, 仅仅……而已.
- Can express modesty, reassurance, dismissiveness, or subtle bitterness.
- More refined than 罢了, which carries the same meaning but is more colloquial.
- Always appears at the absolute end of the sentence.
Chinese culture values modesty. Using 而已 after describing one's achievements is a common rhetorical strategy: 我不过是尽了自己的本分而已 (I merely did my duty, that is all). This self-deprecation is expected and appreciated in Chinese social interaction.

而已 is not an adverb — it cannot modify a verb. Use 只是 or 不过 as the adverb and put 而已 at the end.
