Concessive: 即便……也…… (Even If — Literary)
让步复句:即便……,也……
Express strong concession using the literary 即便……也 pattern to state that a result holds even under extreme conditions
即便 means "even if / even though" in a literary register. Combined with 也, it states that the result remains true regardless of the extreme or hypothetical condition.
即便 is more literary and formal than 即使. Both mean "even if," but 即便 carries a slightly more concessive, resigned tone and appears more often in writing and formal speech.

Understanding 让步复句:即便……,也……
At the advanced level, you already know 即使……也 (even if...still). Now you add its more literary twin: 即便……也. The word 即便 combines 即 ("even/immediately") with 便 ("then/even"), creating a concessive that sounds polished and literary. 即便你成就再大,也不能骄傲 (Even if your achievements are great, you cannot be arrogant). This pattern expresses unwavering principles, unconditional commitments, and philosophical observations. It appears in essays, speeches, editorials, and literary prose. The tone is often one of firm conviction or gentle resignation — "even under these extreme circumstances, the truth remains the same."
Key Points
- 即便 (jíbiàn) = "even if / even though" — literary, formal variant of 即使.
- The condition after 即便 is usually extreme, hypothetical, or worst-case.
- 也 in the result clause shows the outcome is unchanged despite the extreme condition.
- More literary and slightly softer than 即使 — suits reflective, philosophical contexts.
- Common in: essays, speeches, editorial writing, literary prose.
- 即便如此 (jíbiàn rúcǐ) = "even so / even if that's the case" — a useful standalone phrase.
- Can combine with 再: 即便再困难也要坚持 (even if it becomes even more difficult, we must persist).
Chinese philosophical and political writing frequently uses 即便 to express unwavering principles. The Confucian tradition of holding to one's values regardless of circumstances (穷则独善其身) aligns perfectly with this pattern.

也 must be placed in the result clause before the verb, not attached to 即便如此.
The condition after 即便 should be adverse or extreme. Good weather going to the park is normal — there is no concession. Use a challenging condition.
