尽 and 净 appear before 是 or a verb to express "nothing but / all." 一齐 and 一同 appear before the main verb to express "together." 尽 is slightly more neutral; 净 carries a tone of complaint. 一齐 emphasises simultaneous action; 一同 is more formal.

尽 can also mean "to the fullest extent" in other contexts. 净 often implies displeasure. 一齐 stresses doing something at the same time. 一同 is interchangeable with 一起 but more literary.

Understanding 范围、协同副词:尽、净、一齐、一同

This lesson pairs two scope adverbs (尽 and 净) with two coordination adverbs (一齐 and 一同), each pair offering subtle but important distinctions. 尽 (jìn) means "all" or "entirely" when used as an adverb — 尽是些基础工作 means "nothing but basic tasks." It states a fact about totality without necessarily complaining. 净 (jìng) is its close cousin but with an attitude — 这里净是垃圾 means "there is nothing here but garbage," and the speaker is clearly unhappy about it. When you want to express "together," 一齐 (yìqí) emphasises simultaneity — everyone doing the same action at the same moment, like 大家一齐动手 (everyone pitch in together at once). 一同 (yìtóng) is a more formal synonym of 一起 that simply means "together" without the emphasis on exact simultaneity — 一同努力 (work together). Mastering these distinctions allows you to convey not just meaning but attitude and register.

Key Points

  • 尽 (jìn) = "all / entirely / nothing but" — neutral statement of totality.
  • 净 (jìng) = "nothing but / only" — carries a complaining or negative tone.
  • 一齐 (yìqí) = "together / simultaneously" — emphasises doing something at the same time.
  • 一同 (yìtóng) = "together" — formal synonym of 一起.
  • 尽 often appears in the pattern 尽是些…… (nothing but some…).
  • 净 is colloquial and often paired with undesirable things: 净说废话 (nothing but nonsense).
  • 一齐 is often used with actions that benefit from synchronisation: 一齐唱, 一齐喊.
  • 一同 appears in formal and written contexts: 一同参加, 一同出席.

The concept of collective action (一齐动手) is deeply valued in Chinese culture. Whether it is cleaning up after a community event or working on a group project, the idea that everyone pitches in together reflects the collectivist orientation that permeates Chinese social values.

大家一齐喊:三、二、一!

When emphasising simultaneous action (everyone shouting at the same time), use 一齐. 一同 does not stress simultaneity as strongly.

他尽说些好话。(He says nothing but nice things — complaining)
他净说些好话。

If you are complaining about someone only saying nice things (e.g., being insincere), use 净 which carries the negative/complaining tone.

我们一同参观了故宫。

Visiting a palace is not about doing something simultaneously — it is about going together. Use the more general 一同 (or 一起).

一齐 is your countdown word — whenever people need to act at exactly the same moment, use 一齐.

3

一同 is the formal upgrade of 一起 — use it in written Chinese and formal speeches.
