(subject +) XY

Use two opposing or contrasting actions/states with 也不是 after each to express that neither option is suitable — the person is stuck in an embarrassing or awkward situation.

X and Y are typically opposite or contrasting actions: 哭也不是,笑也不是 (crying doesn't work, laughing doesn't work); 走也不是,留也不是 (leaving doesn't work, staying doesn't work). The pattern always implies a feeling of being trapped, embarrassed, or at a loss.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the X也不是,Y也不是 pattern

Understanding X也不是,Y也不是

The X也不是,Y也不是 pattern is a vivid colloquial expression used to describe being caught in a dilemma where no option feels right. Imagine someone tells an offensive joke at dinner: you are angry, but 哭也不是,笑也不是 — crying would be too dramatic, laughing would condone the behavior, so you are stuck. This expression captures that exact feeling of awkward paralysis. The pattern always uses two contrasting actions — typically antonyms like 哭/笑, 走/留, 坐/站, 说/不说 — followed by 也不是 to negate each one. It paints a picture of helplessness and is very common in storytelling, descriptions of embarrassing moments, and humorous narratives. It is quintessentially colloquial and adds color and emotion to your Chinese.

Key Points

  • X and Y are typically contrasting or opposite actions: 哭/笑, 走/留, 坐/站, 进/退.
  • 也不是 means "is not right either / doesn't work either."
  • The pattern implies awkwardness, embarrassment, or being at a loss.
  • Often preceded by a description of the cause: 气得/紧张得/吓得 + X也不是,Y也不是.
  • Can be followed by a summary comment: ……真不知道怎么办好.
  • Highly colloquial — common in spoken Chinese and literary narratives.

Chinese literature and xiangsheng (相声, cross-talk comedy) frequently use this pattern for humorous effect. Describing someone as 坐也不是站也不是 (can't sit, can't stand) vividly portrays nervousness or embarrassment, and audiences immediately relate to the feeling of being stuck.

走也不对,留也不对。
走也不是,留也不是。

The fixed pattern uses 也不是, not 也不对. While 不对 (not right) has a similar meaning, the idiomatic expression specifically requires 不是.
