Statement Aexpectation + Statement Bcontrasting reality

The first clause presents an expectation, belief, or situation. 然而 introduces a contrasting reality that goes against what was expected. It is a formal, literary connector meaning "however" or "nevertheless."

然而 is more formal and literary than 但是 or 可是. It is common in written Chinese, news, essays, and formal speech, but less common in casual conversation. The contrast introduced by 然而 is usually between an expectation and a surprising or disappointing reality.

Understanding ……,然而……

You already know 但是 and 可是 for expressing "but." Now at HSK 4, you add 然而 to your toolkit — a more formal, literary version of "however" or "nevertheless." The key difference is register: 但是 is everyday, 可是 is casual, and 然而 is formal and often written. When you say 我知道中文很有用,然而中文也太难了, the 然而 creates a dramatic pivot — you acknowledge Chinese is useful, then turn sharply to the difficulty. This dramatic contrast is what makes 然而 powerful. It often appears between an expectation and a surprising reality, between hope and disappointment, or between a common belief and a contradicting fact. You will encounter 然而 frequently in news articles, academic writing, and speeches. Using it in your own writing will immediately elevate your Chinese to a more sophisticated level.

Key Points

  • 然而 (rán'ér) = "however / nevertheless / yet" — formal contrastive connector.
  • More literary than 但是 (neutral) and 可是 (casual).
  • Creates a dramatic contrast between expectation and reality.
  • Common in written Chinese: essays, news articles, speeches, formal reports.
  • Position: 然而 comes at the beginning of the second clause, after a comma or period.
  • The first clause often presents something positive or expected; the second reverses it.
  • Can be replaced by 但是 in casual speech, but loses the formal tone.

Chinese formal writing has a rich tradition of balanced contrast — presenting one side, then the other. 然而 is a cornerstone of this style, appearing in editorials, literary criticism, and political commentary. Learning to use it well shows you can engage with Chinese at an intellectual level.

Tips & Tricks

1

Save 然而 for writing and formal speech — in casual conversation, 但是 or 可是 sounds more natural.

2

The contrast must be genuine: expectation vs. reality, hope vs. disappointment, belief vs. fact.

3

Adding 却 (yet) after 然而 strengthens the contrast even further: 然而……却……

4

Read Chinese news articles and notice how often 然而 appears — it will help you internalize the formal tone.

Homework

Write four sentences using 然而, each contrasting an expectation with a surprising reality. Try to write on different topics: one about school, one about work, one about travel, and one about a person. Use formal, essay-like language.
