Use 假如 to introduce a hypothetical condition, followed by 就 in the main clause to state the consequence. 假如 means "if" or "supposing" and is slightly more formal or literary than 如果.

就 is optional but commonly included for emphasis. 假如 can appear at the beginning of the sentence or after the subject of the conditional clause. This pattern is interchangeable with 如果...就..., but 假如 carries a stronger hypothetical or imagined nuance.

Listen to Jason & Amy explain the 假如……,(就)…… pattern

Understanding 假如……,(就)……

The 假如...就... pattern is used to express hypothetical or imagined conditions in Chinese. While 如果 is the most common word for "if," 假如 adds a slightly more formal or literary tone. It often implies that the speaker considers the condition somewhat unlikely or purely imagined. The 就 in the second clause signals a logical consequence — "then" in English. This structure is essential for discussing plans, possibilities, and contingencies. You will encounter it frequently in both spoken and written Chinese, especially in formal discussions, essays, and when people want to emphasize the hypothetical nature of a situation.

Key Points

  • 假如 (jiǎrú) introduces the hypothetical condition; it is more formal than 如果 (rúguǒ).
  • 就 (jiù) introduces the result or consequence and can be omitted when the meaning is clear.
  • 假如 often implies the condition is imagined or less likely to happen.
  • The subject can appear before or after 假如: 假如我有钱 or 我假如有钱.
  • Negative conditions use 假如 + 不/没: 假如你不来,我就自己去。
  • This pattern is commonly used in both spoken and written Chinese, leaning slightly more formal.

In Chinese culture, using hypothetical language like 假如 can soften a request or suggestion. Rather than directly telling someone what to do, speakers often frame advice as a hypothetical: 假如我是你,我就不会这么做 (If I were you, I would not do it this way). This indirect approach reflects the cultural value of giving face (面子) and maintaining harmony.

Common Mistakes

假如有困难,就你一定要告诉我。
假如有困难,你就一定要告诉我。

就 must come after the subject in the result clause, not before it. The word order is: subject + 就 + predicate.

假如我有钱了,就去旅行。
假如我有钱了,我就去旅行。

The result clause needs a subject. Even if the subject is the same as in the condition clause, it should be stated or clearly implied.

假如你来如果,我们就出发。
假如你来了,我们就出发。

Do not mix 假如 and 如果 in the same clause. Use one or the other — they are synonyms and should not be combined.

Tips & Tricks

1

Think of 假如 as a slightly more formal or literary version of 如果. Use it when you want to sound more thoughtful or when the condition is clearly imagined.

2

Remember that 就 goes after the subject in the result clause: 我就去, not 就我去.

3

Practice pairs: 假如...就... for hypotheticals and 既然...就... for facts (since...then...).

4

When writing essays or giving speeches, 假如 sounds more polished than 如果.

Homework
